Default [ELC Signing] Nail Yakupov signs 3-year with Oilers

    http://oilers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=638418

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have signed right-winger Nail Yakupov to a three-year entry level contract.

Steve Tambellini says, "We're very happy to sign Nail to a three-year contract. He's an extremely talented and passionate young man who we feel will be an integral part of our team for many years to come."
Yakupov, who was selected 1st overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, played in 42 games last season for the Sarnia Sting collecting 69 points (31G, 38A).

In 2010-11, the 5’11”, 190-pound right-winger recorded 101 points (49G, 52A) in 65 games with Sarnia. That year he was named the OHL Rookie of the Month three times as well as the OHL Rookie of the Year and BMO Rookie of the Year in the CHL.

Yakupov, who hails from Nizhnekamsk, Republic of Tatarstan, was part of Team Russia in the 2011 World Junior U18 Championship. He collected 13 points (6G, 7A) and scored a hat trick in the bronze-medal game, including an empty-net goal with four seconds left, helping defeat Team Canada 6-4.

Yakupov was also part of the 2012 World Junior Championship with Team Russia that lost 1-0 to Sweden in the gold medal game, acquiring a silver medal. In seven games he had a team-high nine assists and was +5.
No surprise obviously but just thought I'd put it up.

this is good because if there is a lockout, he would not be able to sign in Russia due to the NHL-KHL "agreement". So he would play in Sarnia if the season was delayed.

I see. Well perhaps, though you can live a whole life thinking what if. Better to get the guy locked up and get your team ready to try and win some games if there is actually a season.

It's scary how loaded Edmonton is up front.

Lol, who cares if they are weak defensively, they will score 6 per game!

    Hall-RNH-Eberle
    Hemsky-Gagner-Yakupov
    Smyth-Horcoff-Jones

This team is one goalie short of being a cup contender.

I would like to see them try to get a good young backup with starting experience in a low-cost trade. Guys that come to mind are Budaj, Harding, Greiss, Montoya (not sure he has the mental ability to carry a team but he has the skill)...

Of course, a real starter would be ideal, but a decent backup that could become the next Mike Smith could be the key to keeping their foward group intact!

    and 6 defensemen...and veteran forwards...and health...and a whole lot of other stuff.

who cares if they are weak defenisvely? Probably their management, coaching, and ownership since no team wins the Cup without a strong defense.

2005-06 was a weird year in the NHL, first year back from the lockout, the rules were changing and crazy things happened.

Jonathon Cheechoo won the Richard (with 56 Goals, 93 points total); Wade Redden scored 50 points; there were 7 players who scored 100 points or more; 26 players scored more than 80 points (compared to 9 this year); and the Carolina Hurricanes, of all teams, won the Stanley Cup.
    Setting up the play.

Hurricanes were a really good team that year.

Anyways, Yakupov's whole family is moving to Edmonton with him. Strange.

Ovechkin's whole family moved to Washington with him. If that it helps him concentrate on being a better hockey player then that's great news!
