None of these would surprise me. They've thrown north of $100M at 3 players now (2 via UFA, 1 RFA).

They've clearly decided they're adding someone, damn the price.

Insanity: trying the same thing and expecting a different result. It's just not meant to be.

I was going to say something about goaltenders here, but that seemed was too easy.

Why? He is worth a 7.8M cap hit and the four 1st round picks was not fair compensation. The owners are covering for the up-front cost, so I see no reason why he should be let go.

No chance. This is the Habs we're talking about. They would match on the day it happened.

Well, it sucks that he won't be in orange and black, but I still think losing him for draft picks would have destroyed the Predators on and off the ice.

The financial impact of the contract might not make this a "win" for Nashville upfront, but they avoided it becoming a devastating loss, and the bottom line is they have their franchise player locked up for the rest of his career at a reasonable cap hit.

So as long as they hold onto him for the duration, and he remains healthy, they'll recoup their outlay over the years.

The biggest problem Poile faces now, is constructing the rest of the roster around him without letting upfront money due Weber over these next few years keep them from being competitive for the next five years or so while Rinne and Weber are still in their prime.

Yeah, I think that the worst thing that could happen to the Flyers right now would be for Ed Snider's money to be burning a hole in Holmgren's pocket(s), and him make a move "just to do something" that hurts them longterm.

Whether that's throwing tons of money away for Doan, or tons of potential away for Ryan; Holmgren knows he still has holes in his roster, but he's probably better offer passing on both of those guys and plugging the holes with some of those draft choices he was just going to fork over for Weber.

LOL at arrogant Flyers fans saying Nashville couldn't afford to match even though the Preds have been saying for a year now they'd match any offer sheet for Weber.

And no, Weber won't be traded (were Sakic/Kesler/Vanek/Backes/etc. traded?).

I don't think anyone was arrogant. I think fans were looking at the actions that transpired with Nashville and felt that the deal was structured in a way that would make it financially impossible to match. The fans weren't the ones paying the money so there was no need to be arrogant. It was speculation. That said, I can tell you right now that the Flyers ORGANIZATION was very arrogant and felt the Predators couldn't match.

It also appears Weber is surprised....

@DarrenDreger: Fair to say Weber and those close to him are surprised Preds matched.

I'm not a fan of either team, but I think the Preds made a huge mistake....my belief is out of spite. They now have a contract which they can't really afford, and a player that obviously wanted to play somewhere else. I'm sure Weber will be the professional that he is, but his heart just won't be there. I wouldn't want a player on my team that wanted to be elsewhere, doesn't make any sense. Preds will be on the shortlist to be relocated in the next 5 years. Good try Philly!!
