    Default Flyers offered Parise 110M

Happy for Parise, but if he did coordinate his and Suter's signing, as the link states below, i find the posturing and time it took for him to sign a little annoying, especially after he stated that he and Suter always wanted to play together. It was obviously premeditated. Besides that, good for him for being able to go home and playout his career.

    Already a thread on this...

I don't know how anyone can fault a guy for taking his sweet time to mull over a decision that will commit the next 13 years of his life...

If it were me, I would take my sweet ass time, drag it out, talk to everyone in the world who's opinion mattered to me, and then on top of all that, after I made my decision, I'd sleep on it for a few more days just to make sure.

Free agency is in July and not in week 2 of August for a reason. Players can take their time if they want to. They don't all have to sign their deals during the TSN special.

Yea i would probably do the same. I would easily take three times as long as Parise did.

im sure he probably thought about it well before free agency. these guys know which teams are going to try auire them. hell i know which teams are trying for them.
they make it sound as if its a huge surprise on july first when they probably already narrowed it down to 2 or 3 teams and are just waiting for the numbers.
makes for a borring july first free agency day.

Sounds like some poolies would like the month of June to be a negotiation period! (no contracts until July 1).

That would push the draft into May, and each playoff series would become 7 games in 7 days.

I keep hearing people say that Parise knew he was going to be a free agent for a long time but what they should remember is that Parise was kind of trying to win a Stanley Cup until June 11...and then after that I'm sure he wanted to spend some time with family to unwind after the long season.

You can't fault a guy for not thinking about the future when what he is supposed to be focused on is doing his best in the present to get his team to the final prize.

I find that all the people who are ticked off that 'Parise took too much time' are implying that Parise is selfish...when clearly he has shown time and time again that he is not.

I definitely agree about the cup aspect, for sure. My only gripe is when you look at how long it took him to sign - not that long a wait it was more hyped and dragged out than it needed to be, especially considering the big picture, which is him and Suter wanting to play together for years. Why all the: "when you're making a big decision like this, you have to look at all angles" (me paraphrasing Parise) type of comments? He knew that he was going to get money, so it wasn't about that. Apparently, going home was a huge factor, and perhaps the only one that could break even with or trump the NJ loyalty factor. Beyond that, the Suter factor to possible sway Parise. Yes, hindsight is surely 20/20, but looking bac on it, one has to wonder who was he seriously considering besides NJ and Minn? I believe it was a tough decison for him, definitely. I'm just hypothesizing that it was more premeditated than he let on.

The reason why he made those comments is because the media asked for updates. Cookie cutter responses are what hockey players are instructed to give.

Oh, i get that. I truly do. He's a high profile player who getsa disgusting amount of media coverge far beyond what a normal person could understand, let alone stomach. Parise strikes me as an honest, blue collar guy who speaks his mind. I don't think you're saying his responses were cookie cutter. In fact, i believe you are saying the opposite. With the aforementioned in mind, i'm just a little surprised it played out the way it did, considering the circumstances: chance to go home, make money and play with Suter. Maybe other teams could only offer the money or maybe Suter + money, but if Minn was able to pull of Suter as well, which they did, then, it was a no-brainer to pick Minn, the only choice. Perhaps that came to play later than expected, but i have my doubts b/c Parise and Suter talked about olaying together years ago. I think it's a bit much to assume that neither realized they would both be FAs this year.

Can you fault a guy for wanting to sign on the 4th of July, and have everyone in the country celebrate with him and his buddy Ryan on their new $98 million dollar contracts??

The report that he turned down so much money from the Flyers and actually made his deal with the Wild lower makes me want him on our team even more. That is exactly the kinda guy we need wearing orange and black. Shame he didn't choose us, even tho the contract would have crippled us.

Ah, it probably worked out for the best.

Sure, Parise might have looked good on Giroux's line, but had the Flyers successfully signed him, they wouldn't have had the money left to re-sign Carle, or Jagr, and would have probably had to clear additional cap space by dumping a good young players like JvR or Bobrovsky, ..,.and Parise would have taken valuable icetime away from exciting young prospects like Zac Rinaldo, and Tom Sestitio.

Yes, I'm sure it all worked out for the best.

Okay, so maybe I'm still just a tad bitter.
