i believe ESPN (and likely other sites) waits to put a player on the DL until the player's team makes the move officially. i got chris carpenter for a bargain in an auction draft two weeks ago, but the Cardinals havent DL'ed him yet. can be frustrating, but once the season's underway there's rarely ever a delay between announcement and official move.

as for utley and most other guys we know will begin the year on the DL, you can expect the move to be made official before the season kicks off on wednesday / thursday.

the issue you will run into is: a player placed on the DL can be placed retroactive to the injury date.

All injuries are done in 15 and 60 day stints. 15 is normally minor things, 60 is normally major issues. players cannot come back early, but can go on temporary assignment to the minors after their stint is up.

Frustration occurs when: a player who has a replacement on team is hurt and it looks like a week or 2. the team does not put him on the DL until he is not back after a week, and he goes on retroactivly for that whole week... lot of good that did you
