Default My First Trade of the Offseason

I just made what I think is an excellent keeper trade for the next few years. I am in a keeper pool where you can keep 10 vets and 4 rookies each year. Sundin was outside my top ten and I had two offers for him - one for Schremp (straight up) and one for Erik Johnson. Since I am only keeping 2 dmen, I traded Sundin and an 8th round pick for Erik Johnson. Now I have Pitkanen, Ballard and Johnson as half of my Dman starting line-up. In our pool dmen get more points for goals, assists, pp goals, penalty mins, etc. than forwards. Not bad eh?

that is a great trade. very well done. Can I ask you though, was the other GM a Leaf fan? Or does he have a great chance of winning this year. Personally I think he would have had just as good of a chance winning with E.Johnson as to Sundin. Good deal MacCormack. Way to go!!

No he isn\'t a Leaf fan - he is loading up on vets to try to win this year. But he is probably releasing Yashin so he had a spot for Sundin.

My top 10 are 6 forwards, 2 dmen and 2 goalies (we can dress 2 goalies at a time):

    F Martin St. Louis
    F Marc Savard
    F Paul Kariya
    F Patrice Bergeron
    F Nylander
    F Zach Parise
    D Pitkanen
    D Ballard
    G Luongo
    G Dipietro

    My Rookies:
    D Erik Johnson
    F Bobby Ryan
    F Boyd
    G Harding

Besides Sundin, I will also try to trade F Drury and D Mara for more draft picks.

Trade Drury? How come he isn\'t one of your keepers?

I still think Ballard will be a very good defenseman. He broke his foot 3 games in which pretty much wrecked his season.

My other dmen are Brad Stuart, Paul Mara (who I am trading because his value is higher than the others), Salei, Ric Jackman, Spacek, Poti.

I got most of my dmen in Free Agency last year and plan on doing that again.

Which forward would you drop in place of Drury? Or would most of you drop Ballard and keep Drury?

If those are your d-men, then your plan to get some assets by trading Mara probably isn\'t bad.

As for Drury, I might consider him above both Kariya and Nylander. I know that he\'s ranked below both on Dobber\'s list, but I think that he\'s undervalued on that list. Nylander had a great season, but I don\'t see him repeating it. He\'s not signed with NY yet, either, so he\'s not guaranteed to be with Jagr next season. If he\'s with Jagr, he gets 75-ish. If not, he doesn\'t break 70. As for Kariya, I like him (being from the Greater Vancouver area particularly), but don\'t see him doing any more than maintaining his current level of production. That means around 75 points as well. Drury, on the other hand, is a little younger than either and I think has more points left in him. He had 69 last season, and I think he\'s good for 80+ if he stays with Buffalo, and 75+ on any other random team.

I might even release Drury and draft him again because if I released Kariya or Nylander they would most certainly be drafted in the first round. Drury could slip to the second round.

Wow, I don\'t see how Drury would slip to the 2nd round, ahead of Nylander or Karyia...if I was drafting I would take Drury before Nylander as he is only usefull when playing with Jags, and there is no gaurantee of that.
There has to be a better d-man than Ballard? Or maybe you could re-draft him as he would probably slip down quite a bit I would think.
