Smile Future of Edmonton Goal Tending?

Question for the group. What do you think is most likely to happen in between the pipes for the Oilers in the post Khabibulin era (two more years on contract)?

    A) Devan Dubnyk has the talent to take the reins
    B) Free agent signing becomes the starter
    C) Something else?

Bonus question - When does this new era start? Does Dubnyk take charge this year? Alternatively does Khabi hold on to get his fair share of starts this season and next?

    What do you think?

They need to give Dubnyk a chance this year and have Khabby come off the bench. The Oilers need to see if he is the answer going towards the future. Khabby will give them a good option off the bench and with his troubles behind him maybe a solid year.
Thinking 60/40 Khabby if he stays healthy. If you own one you might as well own the other as the Oilers are a team that will be on the rise the next few seasons.

i feel that they are gonna give duber a fair shot this year to see if he could become a legit number one. i feel the workload will be 50/50 or 60/40 in favor of duber. if duber proves that he cant be a legit number one i think they will start looking either via the trade route or through free agency. the oilers also may have a couple intriguing prospects coming up through the pipelines in 3-5 years with bunz, perhonen, tuohimma. i feel that if these kids are developed properly one of them could turn into the starter we have been looking for

I think they'll hit up the free agency route or trade in a couple years when they are closer to competing

I agree with this. I don't believe that Dubnyk is an elite goalie. I think he may give Khaby a fight for the next couple of years. At best, I foresee a 50/50 type siutation until Khabibulin moves on and then I hope/believe they will sign a new FA goalie or trade for a legit starter. I don't have faith in any of the goalie currently in the Oiler system.

Dubnyk has the tools to be a #1 goalie. I'll put him top 20. Look at the pretty good numbers he put up on a HORRID defensive team. Compare that to Khabibulin or the rest of the league.

He had a better sv % than other hot shot young goalies like Pavelec, Bernier, Neuvirth, Halak and Howard. So -better numbers on a worse team. Why does this guy get no respect?

I think EDM could sign an experienced goalie for 2012-2013.
Hall & Eberle will be in the final (year 3) of their entry level contracts (ELC).

This is as-good-as-it-gets as bang-for-the-buck on their salaries.
Teams often win Stanley Cups because they are getting huge values out of cheap salaries.

CHI won it on the final discount years of Kane/Toews/Keith contracts.
I believe PIT won it on the last year of a Malkin-discount contract.

If EDM shows promise this year - they may try to leap into a 2012-2013 playoffs spot by grabbing a top tier UFA goalie (Vokoun? Rinne?).

Down the stretch, Dubnyk's play really improved on arguably one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL. Watching him in Kamloops as a member of the WHL Blazers, Dubnyk showed he had the size and athleticism to be an NHL goalie on what was an AWFUL Blazers team. I think that with Khabibulin's struggles, the Oilers will certainly want to test the waters and see if Dubnyk can be that full time guy. I expect the split to be more like what we saw at the end of this season (50/50) until either guy steps up or gets hurt. I have been watching the EDM goalie situation rather closely, and I think Dubnyk could be the guy. Of course, nothing is for certain between the pipes. I have also read a lot of good things from Goalie Guild about Dubnyk, so I'm not the only one who feels this way.

PS: Olivier Roy is the best two-word joke I know.

For Oilers fans sake, I sure hope not (and I don't think they're convinced since they keep grabbing goalies in the draft, thankfully). Roy doesn't have the mental makeup to be a good teams starter, nor was he well-liked in his junior dressing room. I pretty much gave up hope of Canada's chances when Roy was named Canada's goalie last year, but he lost the job just in the nick of time.

Not a big game goalie, and not a great locker room guy (at least in Junior).

I'd lean towards Perhonen, but in all likelihood, it'll be a FA guy or trade. Maybe Schneider?

I hope not Olivier Roy is brutal. IMO. I feel that dubby should be the starter out of camp and I hope they let him run with 65-70% of games. What the hell do they have to lose.
I would love too see my oilers try and land Rinne in the next off season but I believe Nashville will have him locked up by then.
