Default OHL Weekly Ramblings - May 9th

OHL Player of the Week – Majors’ Justin Shugg
The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Justin Shugg of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors is the OHL Player of the Week with a league-high six points scoring three goals and three assists in the first four games of the Rogers OHL Championship Series against the Owen Sound Attack.

Shugg has recorded a point for the Majors in all four games of the Rogers OHL Championship Series against the Attack beginning with an assist as part of a 5-2 win in Game one last Tuesday night. He followed that with his best performance of the series scoring two goals as first star of a 6-2 win last Thursday night in Game two. He also picked up a pair of assists despite a 6-5 overtime loss on Friday, and scored the lone goal for the Majors in a 2-1 overtime loss on Sunday.

Shugg is one of the Carolina Hurricanes’ many good prospects.

2011 OHL Priority Selection Video Highlights
Good video highlights of all 20 OHL teams. Pick and choose which ones you want to watch

The biggest stories of the drafts were:
    • Max Domi being selected 8th overall after already declaring he would take the NCAA route. See below for more on this story
    • The Belleville Bulls select Jordan Subban making him the third brother to be selected by the franchise. PK Subban (Montreal Canadiens) previously played for Belleville and Malcolm Subban is the current goaltender for the Bulls. Check out this picture of the 3 subbans. Marselis Subban, the cousin of PK, Malcolm and Jordan, was selected in the 5th round of the draft by the London Knights.
    • There were lots of players who fell in the draft due to their unknown status about where they would play (NCAA or OHL) but none bigger than Anthony DeAngelo. The young defenseman was a Top 10 talent but fell into the 2nd round where the Sarnia Sting selected him. DeAngelo is expected to report to Sarnia and should help Sarnia’s poor defensive unit.
    • For more information, check out the full results of the draft
    • Dobber Forum OHL Priority Selection Draft Thread can be found here for discussion
    • The 2011 CHL Import Draft will take place on June 28th (9am). Barrie holds the 1st overall selection of the CHL Import Draft (PET – 4th, SSM – 7th, SAR – 10th)

    What’s up with Max Domi?

When Kingston Frontenacs’ GM Doug Gilmour decided to draft Max Domi with the 8th overall pick he knew that Max Domi was not likely to play for them next season. Yesterday Max Domi was caught tweeting the following to a friend,
    @max_domi
@jjmarks16 naw man im not playing for kingston...heading down to the ushl and playing for inde i think”
Domi deleted his tweet shortly after
The Domi family has been quite forward with their NCAA decisions. However, in the past there have been quite a few examples of players who opted out of their NCAA commitments to pursue the CHL route in hopes of fast tracking their hockey careers. For now, it appears Max will honour his word and head to the USHL next season to play for the Indiana Ice before moving onto the University of Michigan. I guess time will tell.

You can read more about Domi’s situation over at Yahoo! Sports “OHL: Doug Gilmour selects Max Domi, awaits inevitable?

Sarnia Set to Announce NEW Coach/GM
The Sarnia Sting have apparently decided on their next bench boss and he will officially be introduced in a press conference tomorrow @ 1pm. It is believed that the Sarnia Sting will name Jacques Beaulieu as the new coach and General Manager.

Beaulieu will replace Trevor Letowski as head coach and Dave MacQueen as General Manager. Jacques Beaulieu is the father of top NHL prospect Nathan Beaulieu (NHL Entry Draft section below for more on Nathan). Last season, Jacques served as the assistant coach of the London Knights. He couldn't talk to any teams until after the draft because he was under contract to the Knights but it was obvious the Sting had targeted the 43-year-old as a potential candidate early in their search.

The Sting are hoping that Beaulieu can bring some success to the Sting
franchise who have struggled to find a good fit after going through ten coaches since they moved to Sarnia in 1994.

    OHL Playoffs – Championship Series

The Owen Sound Attack returned home this past weekend trailing two games to none to the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in the OHL Finals. However, the Attack exited the weekend all tied up with the Majors at two games apiece as they won both home games in overtime fashion.

The teams will now essentially play a best of five series as they return to Mississauga on Tuesday for Game 5 (@7pm). The Majors are definitely the more talented team but there is little doubt that the Attack play harder and with more heart. The finish of this series is going to be a dandy!

Sarnia Sting’s “Pollen Nation” – The Hecklers

Inspired by the Vancouver Canuck's Green Men, it's time to give some local recognition to some hysterical OHL fans. I have attended many sporting events in my lifetime and it’s always fun to observe the casual “heckler”. However, Sarnia is home to one of the better groups of hecklers known as “Pollen Nation”.

Pollen Nation is a group of fans who enter Sarnia's RBC Center every game with bags of props and sit directly behind the visiting team’s bench wearing their custom-made jerseys. It doesn’t take long for the opposing team to notice them as they holler, chant, and make all kinds of ruckus as they bang on the glass with their yellow hardhats. The Sarnia Sting Pollen Nation has been welcomed with open arms for the past eight years and it is fun to watch these guys in action. Nail Yakupov and Alex Galchenyuk will surely be attracting some more visitors (scouts, fans, etc.) next year as teams gear up for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and I am sure that “Pollen Nation” might gain some more fans........or.....more likely enemies.

    2011 NHL Entry Draft Notes

[Part Three] 2011 Draft Class Hierarchy will be released later this week and will feature the prospects I have ranked 21st to 30th in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft. Check out previously released Part One and Part Two editions.

    The Case for Nathan Beaulieu
The series continues and this time 2011bruinsdraftwatch.blogspot.com looks at prospect defenseman Nathan Beaulieu. In my opinion, Beaulieu is the fifth best ranked defenseman available in this years’ draft class behind Adam Larsson, Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Murphy and Duncan Siemens.

As most of you know, Jensen is one of my favourite prospects of this draft class. Jensen possesses the skills to be a good NHLer but lacks in his consistency and effort. Check out the Jensen video compilation put together by our friends at nhldraftvideo.blogspot.com

The Mississauga Majors won 7-3 last night in Game 5 to take a 3-2 series lead over Owen Sound. The Majors are just one win away from an OHL Championship.

The game got ugly last night and Andrew Shaw of the Attack received a match penalty and will miss the remainder of the OHL Championship series because of it. In addition, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors organization received a $2,500 fine for inappropriate public post-game comments made by Head Coach Dave Cameron. Details of the disciplinary action here

Anaheim prospect Devante Smith-Pelly had a hat trick and an assist in the game for the Majors. Game 6 will take place Thursday night @ 7pm and can be viewed on Rogers TV

Not surprisingly, the Max Domi story is going to be one of the hottest OHL topics of the summer.

Will Domi report to the OHL?
Will Domi honour his word and head to USHL ....and then UofM?
Will Domi's rights be traded by Kingston?
How much will an OHL team (ahem, London) have to give up for Domi?
The better question might be....when will Max Domi be traded to London?

Interesting piece over at Yahoo! Sports on Max Domi's situation

Owen Sound wins Game 6 3-2 as they get a 41-save effort from Jordan Binnington! Binnington has not started a game in over a month. Binnington is ranked 3rd among North American goalies entering the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Owen Sound has put up quite the fight and now it's either team's OHL Championship to win when they return to Mississauga for Game 7 on Sunday, May 15 @ 2pm.

The home team has won every single game this series. Advantage: Majors

Hoping that Rogers' Sportsnet will broadcast it. As of right now, it's only on RogersTV.

Game 7 of the OHL Championship Series starts in less than 10 minutes.

Apparently the Hershey Center is sold out in Mississauga (for the first time all year haha) and there are over 3000 Owen Sound Attack fans that made the trip. This town loves it's team.

I believe Rogers TV is carrying the game in some areas but you can also purchase the game online for about 7$

Jarrod Maidons (Owen Sound 1st Round Pick 2010) scores the OT Game Winning goal in Game 7 of the OHL Championship series to give the Owen Sound Attack the OHL Championship.

The Hershey Center (Majors home rink) when Maidons potted the goal. It sounded like Owen Sound was playing at home. Great game. Great series.

Robbie Mignardi received the OHL Playoff MVP award

Owen Sound wins the Robertson Cup as the Ontario Hockey League's Championship Team. It's great seeing such a small city get behind their players and team the way that the Attack fans did. Well deserved championship!

Dave Cameron's Mississauga Majors are undoubtedly heartbroken as they were the heavy favourites from the beginning of the season. Coach Dave Cameron has lost two championships in the past five months (WJC and OHL)

Both teams will head to the Memorial Cup that begins on Friday.
