OHL Weekly Ramblings - April 26th

Ellis Takes Home More Hardware as he is Named OHL Defenseman of the Year
For the second straight year, Ryan Ellis has been named the Defenseman of the Year and is the recipient of the Max Kaminsky Trophy. The Windsor Spitfire rearguard led all OHL defensemen with 101 points in 58 games and finished fourth in the entire OHL scoring race with 24 goals and 77 assists. Ellis was the first defenseman to score 100 points since Jamie Rivers of the Sudbury Wolves in 1993-94 (121 points).

Ryan Ellis has been nominated three times for this award and becomes the just the third OHL defenseman to win it twice joining elite company of Denis Potvin (1972 and 73) and Bryan Berard (1995 and 96).

Ryan Ellis received 93 of the 95 possible votes. Remember, coaches cannot vote for their own players so its likely that Ryan Murphy (Kitchener) received one other vote as well.

Garrett Wilson Named OHL Player of the Week

The OHL announced that Attack forward Garrett Wilson is the OHL Player of the Week ending April 24th. The Owen Sound forward had 7 points scoring three goals and four assists in the first three games of the Western Conference Championship series.

Doug Gilmour Fired and Promoted in Kingston; Frontenacs name Todd Gill new Head Coach

There was many of Frontenac fans calling for Gilmour's head after the coach led his squad to a 29-30-9 fifth place finish in the Eastern Conference. The hockey world was not happy with Gilmour's results and many accused him of not spending enough time with the club. The Kingston Frontenac organization have decided to promote Gilmour to the General Manager Position and name Todd Gill the new Frontenacs head coach. I am not sure that this managerial change is making people anymore happier in Kingston. The world of twitter does not appear happy.
    Here are some tweets,
"He hardly had time to coach, how will he find time to scout?"
    @sunayas tweets,
And here's what one veteran junior scout has to say about Doug Gilmour as GM: "I can't see Gilmour outworking a lot of GMs in the OHL"
    @msconduct tweets,
Off the bat Gilmour will make a better GM than coach (that's not saying much)... will be interesting to see his hockey mind next season

    OHL Playoff Notes
The top remaining seeds in each conference both hold a 3-1 series lead in their Conference Final matchups.

Mississauga will attempt to eliminate the Niagara IceDogs tonight (7:05).
Owen Sound and Windsor face off for Game 5 Wednesday night as the Spitfires look to remain alive in OHL playoff action.

Zack Kassian (Windsor Spitfires) has been suspended for the remainder of the series (4 games) after receiving a match penalty on Saturday night.

Sneak Preview - OHL Priority Draft

Check out the OHL Section on the Forums for other information on the upcoming OHL Priority Draft that will be held online on May 7th. Barrie holds the first overall pick in this years draft. Check out a few prospects here

Here is a good article breaking down the choices that the Barrie Colts have this year. Obviously, the Colts will be taking a close look at Aaron Ekblad who received "exceptional status" by the CHL last month.

    The Under-18 World Championship Recap

Team USA was victorious over Sweden in overtime to take home the gold medal. The Swedish team had strong performances from Mika Zibanejad and Jonas Brodin who will both be targeted this June for the NHL Entry Draft. Russia defeated Canada by the strong play of 2012-draftee Nail Yakupov (3G, 1A) to take home the goal

Check out the U-18 World Championship thread for more information from dobberites who viewed some of the games.

Ryan Murphy (Kitchener Ranger) was named U-18 Top Defenseman as he was terrific for Team Canada scoring 13 points which set a new record for a Canadian player (previously held by Pierre-Marc Bouchard with 12 points).

OHLers Who Received Medals: Nail Yakupov (Bronze - Russia), Andrey Pedan (Bronze - Russia).

    Tyler Biggs Overrated?

Tyler Biggs has been ranked as a first round prospect (currently 22nd among North American skaters) for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft but I have been saying for a while now that there are better options available in the mid-late first round. Personally, I feel as though he should be projected to go somewhere in the 2nd round. Apparently, Aaron Vickers (from Future Considerations) shares the same views as me...

Under the Radar, but Watch 'Em

The Bruins2011DraftWatch crew has a few prospects to keep an eye on for the upcoming draft. They may not be studs but should be watched.

Sunday Top 10: Characteristic Traits the Scouts Look for

Check out this interesting article that identifies characteristic traits that scouts look for in a prospect.

THN - The Hot List: Morrow to Come

Ryan Kennedy takes a look at some players that we would like to see in the NHL someday. There are several CHL players featured.

Do you want more NHL Entry Draft Prospect stuff?

Be sure to check out my recent release of the [Part One] 2011 NHL Draft Hierarchy where I will be releasing the top players available for the June Entry Draft (in my opinion). Part one featured the top ten players and part one will be released later this week and feature #11-20.

As always, more OHL news to be posted as it is released.
Comments and questions are always welcomed!
    Enjoy!

I always enjoy reading scouting reports and ohlprospects.blogspot.com does a very good interview with the chief scout from futureconsiderations.com

Lots of good discussion regarding 2011 NHL eligible prospects and players who could be "sleepers".

With the Mississauga win tonight, the winner of the Western Conference series (WSR-OS) will be gauranteed a place in the Memorial Cup as a result. #thankstothemajors

    Sorry for the delay Tim.

From everything I have watched and read, Hishon has had an average postseason at best. There are a few OHL scouts who have told me that they have been somewhat disappointed in the fourth-year veteran. Hishon had a goal and an assist in Owen Sounds' 10-4 stomping of Windsor last night but the Owen Sound Attack have relied mostly on captain Garrett Wilson (FLA), Jesse Blacker (TOR) and Bobby Mignardi. Hishon hasnt been terrible by any means but just hasn't really impressed. Owen Sound has relied more on their depth players like Andrew Shawn and Mike Halmo (in addition to the guys above). Owen Sound will need all lines firing and a good series from their veterans Wilson, Blacker and Hishon to have a chance at beating the Mighty Majors.

Hishon has 16 points in 15 Playoff Games to place him 3rd in team scoring. Wilson leads the Attack with 18P in 15games.

OHL Championship Series Ready to Go!

As mentioned above, the Owen Sound Attack wasted no time putting the Windsor Spitfires out of playoff action as they defeated them 10-4 last night at home to win the series 4-1. With the Mississauga win on Tuesday night, it assures that the Owen Sound and Windsor will be competing in the Memorial Cup regardless of how their OHL Championship Series plays out. For the Owen Sound Attack, it will be their first appearance in the Memorial Cup.

Congratulations to both Mississauga and Owen Sound! It's always nice to see a small town OHL organization have such great success.

The Championship Series between these great organizations begins Tuesday, May 3rd @ Mississauga's Hershey Centre.

Windsor Spitfire and OHL Defenseman of the Year Ryan Ellis made his AHL debut tonight with the Milwaukee Admirals. Ellis collected an assist, two penalty minutes, one shot on goal and was even as the Admirals defeated the Houston Aeros 3-1 in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semi-Final. Ellis' assist came on another OHL's goal, Taylor Beck of the Guelph Storm.

It's great to see Ellis getting a late season opportunity to get a taste at pro hockey (in the playoffs)

Over in the dub, my boy Cowen and the Spokane Chiefs are tied up 2-2 with the Portland Winterhawks. They beat Portland 8-3 yesterday, and there were 94 PIMs handed out (60 for Portland alone).

    Go Chiefs! Game 5 tonight.
