Great article. As for sticking up for teammates, Spezza also showed a lot of heart here:

Phaneuf is a pretty tough customer.

Pensionplanpuppets is rioting over Leafs signing of Clarkson and Bozak to those crazy contracts, and not resigning MacArthur. Bernier hasn't proven anything either and now they have a goalie controversy.
Regin hasn't done anything other than in one playoff series 2-3 years ago, and Silfverberg had promise, but was not a superstar. Losing Alfie hurts for sentimental reasons, but Sens improved without taking on onerous contracts.
Semi-retired
It was a very smart day for the Sens. The Top 6 is upgraded and they saved money in the process. Obviously this isn't looking at anything else (intangibles, leadership, etc.), just finances.
Money out:
Gonchar: $5,000,000
Regin - $800,000
Benoit - $900,000
Alfredsson - $1,000,000
Silfverberg - $990,000
Latendresse - $2,000,000
Lundin - $1,150,000
Total = $11,840,000
Money in:
MacArthur = $3,250,000
Ryan = $5,562,500
Total = $8,812,500
Savings = 3,027,500
That savings (and more) can now be used on a veteran RHD through trade.
edit: forgot about Gonchar too
and forgot about re-signing Cowen, Wiercioch, and Condra, all RFAs...so the savings up there is gone basically

note that doesn't work at all if you only look at Alfie's salary last year of $1,000,000.
There is no doubt in my mind that Spezza should become the captain. This is his team now and he is ready for the role.
Sure, you could say Phillips deserves it and I wouldn't debate you on the merits of him, but as I think Big Ev said, if you don't give Spezza the C now, you are most likely losing Spezza when his contract is up in 2 years. He will walk IMO.
Spezza is a leader and he will prove it in short order. Bring this band together and stick it to Alfie. As the hours go by, I still hate the way Alfie left, but he couldn't have provided the Sens with a better rallying cry.
I text a buddy (who is also my ticket rep) and told him I was cancelling my season tickets right after the Alfie news broke. Good thing he knows me well enough that he gave me a 24 hour cooling period and didn't do what I asked. I can't wait for this season!
The Sens are a better team today and their motivation for this season, well, you can't ask a professional athlete for better white board material than Alfie's selfish departure provided.

Ev,
do you know the details of the contract Alfie signed? I've read its 3.5mil in base salary but I'm curious what the bonuses are? Just games played or actual points or what?

"If this was my last season, I don't want to change anything that's going on there. I don't want to demand Bryan or (owner) Eugene (Melynk) that you're going to have make a push for me here to go for it. I think there's too many good things going on there. The torch was going to have to be passed sometime pretty soon anyway."
