Default New York Islanders Goalie Situation

I am curious if anyone here has any insight as to the NYI long term goalie plan. I realize they just re-signed Nabakov but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to realize he isnt the long term answer on the Isle. Dipietro is a buy-out waiting to happen (I am sure they are hoping for an amnesty clause in the new CBA). So with this standard knowledge, WHO is the long term answer in nets for the Isle. They have a few solid prospects in the system. Looking at the list of goalies in the system, who do you see as the future starter?

    Montoya
    Nilsson
    Poulin

Nilsson or Poulin. Both are quality prospects but hard to say who'll be the future of Islanders' goaltending. I have Nilsson in one of my leagues so hoping it's him. He's got the size and skill to be an elite goalie in NHL.

Montoya has no future with the Islanders and Koskinen isn't on the same level as those two other prospects.

Let me attempt to explain this, it is complex. Right now, they have Nabokov in there for one more year after his contract extension. After he is finished in Long Island, I believe Kevin Poulin is going to be the starter. I don't thin they see Montoya as anything other than a backup, so until they trade him, Poulin will remain in the AHL. Kind of a darkhorse to challenge Poulin in the future would be Anders Nilsson, he's a big, athletic goalie that has some pretty nice upside if he can continue progressing as he works on his craft. I think Koskinen and Montoya will be traded at some point.

Got all that? What a mess the Isles goalie situation is.

Montoya is UFA this summer and I don't think he'll get re-signed.

Ah, good find! I was just going by what I knew. Essentially, Nabokov will start, Poulin will be the backup and Nilsson/Koskinen will continue to work in the minors.

I think they re-signed Nabokov so that Nilsson could continue to develop in the AHL and battle it out with Poulin (and likely win the job) in '13-14. Poulin regressed at the AHL level and really didn't impress in his NHL time this season either. If they wanted Poulin to take over, they could have phased him in for next year. And yeah, Montoya will almost certainly not be brought back.

This is definitely a situation I'm following.....I like where the Isles are headed and I picked up Montoya, Poulin, and Nilsson last summer in anticipation of one of them taking the job eventually. Right now I would say Poulin is leading the pack, and although he had a so-so season in Bridgeport, he was much better in the second half.....him and Nilsson won goalie of the month in back-to-back months.

I do think Montoya has the gusto to be a starter in the NHL.....not an all-star but a solid enough goalie. He was filling that role pretty nicely for the Isles until his injury and Nabby took the job and ran with it. I'm not sure what will happen with him this summer but like Carcillo mentioned he could end up somewhere else. I'm just not sure if Poulin or Nilsson are ready to be full-time NHL'ers yet which makes me wonder if NY brings back Montoya for one more year.

So ya, long-term I see Poulin winning the job. But Nilsson is not too far behind and he'd be an intriguing player with his combo of size and athleticism.

Keep in mind that Poulin has already injured his knees twice while Nilsson has not incurred any such injuries yet.
