Well based on his last message it doesn't sound like there's a deal to be done here any more and realistically I'm not so sure there ever was one to be had. He's more willing to take his chances on a rebound from Backstrom and you are more willing to gamble on Varlamov.
I'd be willing to pursue the Benn deal without Couture involved. Perhaps a less solid prospect but my guess is he's over this idea.
Have you considered shopping Varlamov to other teams?
Just because you can't get a deal done with this manager doesn't mean you can't get a good deal from somebody else. If you really are concerned with owning him it may be a good idea to find an owner to deal with even if this one doesn't pan out.
Find a Caps fan if there's one in your league to get the maximum return

It appears you have come to a point in your trade talks where neither of you are willing to sacrifice any more to make this deal happen... especially him and his unwillingness to give up Neuvirth. Sounds like he's got a plan in mind and is only willing to trade with you if you go along with it.
I'd say it's time to bail.
And I'd be willing to bet he comes back to you in the future.
Finding a thrid party to make a 3 way deal could work, but those are often difficult to pull off.

Anyone not named Couture or Vishnevskiy would be more than acceptable IMO but I suspect this guy is over this deal.
I may be in the minority here, but I think even with Couture in there it's acceptable like that. Couture, as we know, has a history of being injury prone and at one point I believe I remember him being a potential band-aid boy on Dobber's draeded list. If that's all that's between you and the deal I don't think I'd let that get in the way. Benn has a ton of upside and although I haven't heard a lot on Holland his numbers keep getting better with experience in the minors.
I'm also not as high on Varlamov as some of the other folks in this thread, so please don't take my opinion as Gospel.

Now you are getting somewhere! Rafalski as a throw in! Huge. Whether you are contending or not, he's a guy who can be top 10 in D points for the next few seasons. Excellent trade value. Benn is an upgrade on Couture and Koivu is an upgrade on Zajac (IMO you may have some arguing otherwise) so toss in Holland and Rafalski and I think you've secured a pretty good deal.
