Let's be clear about it. When you say the first overall rookie pick, you are referring to Taylor Hall? That is who I would take if I had the first overall rookie pick.
And to answer your question: it really depends on your team and the league you're in.
In my league (sig below) I recently offered Kopitar straight up for the pick ... and was turned down. In hindsight, this was probably a bad offer on my part, and it's a good thing it was turned down. Hall may end up having slightly higher upside than Kopitar, but unless he pulls a Stamkos in his sophomore season, it's unlikely his production will match Kopy's for 2-3 years, so I am really just delaying production.
Having said that, I like the fact that Hall is a LW, and with my strength at centre I could have afforded to lose Kopitar for a young stud like Hall. Hence my offer.

I made an offer for the 1st overall in my league with similar scoring categories as the one in my sig, but with a 19 man farm. I offered Stastny and Visnovsky for the 1st overall and it was turned down. It feels like overpayment on my part, but with the hype of prospects its what it will take. I wouldn't add much more (if anything) to acquire that pick.
Also (FWIW) 2 years ago in my league Eric Staal was traded straight up for the first overall pick that ended up being Stamkos.

I have the #3 pick in my 30 team league.
I inquired about trading up for the #1 and was told he would take Eberle or Tavares (from my squad) and the #3 for the first overall.
I declined and traded #3 and #27 for #8 and Hudler. I feel better about trading down as the price was too rich for my blood, and besides I think Tavares is the better player.
I dont' liek your trading down deal very much.......... but for the Gaborik deal, I'd jump all over it.
TML, do I understand you correctly, you would trade Gaborik for the 1st overall pick?

Yeah, Gaborik for all everyone knows is goign to play 10 games next year with a groin injury. Hall should be able to at least hit 40, and a big chance for a lot more
