Alright, did some digging, here's the latest news on Downie.
From Tampabay.com's Lightning beat writer Damian Cristodero:
We have seen the revolving door at right wing on Vinny Lecavalier's line, and so far there has yet to be someone to claim the spot permanently. On the other hand, even Lightning coach Rick Tocchet said perhaps no one has been given a long enough chance to shine.
Consider the Steve Downie experiment, which lasted one scrimmage. Or the Carter Ashton experiment, which lasted less than a game. Same for Stephane Veilleux. Now, it appears Downie, who on Wednesday played well with Lecavalier and left wing Alex Tanguay gets another shot. But for how long?
"Sometimes it's unfair because we're looking for guys to have instant success," Tocchet said before Thursday's game with the Oilers in Winnipeg. "Maybe Steve Downie, if he's playing hard, maybe I have to play him a week or two there. Maybe I've been quick to pull the trigger."
Added the coach: "I thought Downie did a real nice job. Obviously, nothing is given, but the way he played, he deserves a long look on that line."
Said Downie: "Lines have changed numerous times. I'm not looking too far ahead; just play my game and try to win games. That's what it comes down to."
But back to Downie. The kid has done everything the team has asked. He got himself in shape and he committed, at least in theory, to trying to keep his emotions under control. And instead of pouting after his first go-round with Lecavalier's line did not work out, he kept his head down and has another chance. Let's see if he can make the most of it.
From TBO.com's Lightning beat write Erik Erlendsson:
Here’s how the team will line up tonight in Atlanta (last preseason game):
Lines
Alex Tanguay-Vinny Lecavalier-Steve Downie
Ryan Malone-Steven Stamkos-Marty St. Louis
James Wright-Jeff Halpern-Drew Miller
Todd Fedoruk-Zenon Konopka-Stephane Veilleux
Defensive pairings
Mattias Ohlund-Victor Hedman
Paul Ranger-Matt Walker
Andrej Meszaros-Kurtis Foster
Mike Smith to make the start in goal
Antero Niittymaki
So, if you are counting at home, here who is NOT playing tonight:
Forwards - Ryan Craig, Adam Hall, Brandon Bochenski and Brett McLean
Defense - Matt Lashoff, Matt Smaby, Mike Lundin, David Hale, Lukas Krajicek
Downie appears to have Coach Tocchet's nod for now on the top line with Vinny and Tanguay, hoping the chemisty comes. Late last year I know Downie/Stamkos/Malone had alot of chemistry, but apparently Tocchet is determined to spread out his elite talent on two lines, instead of all on top line (Tanguay/Vinny/St Louis). When it all settles out, I wouldn't be surprised to see that happen, instead of trying to force chemistry that may not be there. Just so Downie keeps his head screwed on right and stays in the Top 6, all his fantasy owners could be enjoying the ride.
