Tampa had $11,785,000 in cap prior to the trade, so they have $5,125,000 left to 2-3 forwards, and 1D. So they do have the ability to sign Stamkos, but for like $3m.
McDonagh + 2024 4th (EDM) to TBL
2025 2nd, 2024 7th to NSH
McDonagh has 2 yrs left on his deal where his cap hit is $6.75m each yr.
McDonagh was traded from TBL to Nashville July 2022 for Philippe Myers and Grant Mismash.

He's def their 3rd best dman now though, and it was their biggest hole it seemed like. And he played well for Nashville all yr.
I get the move, but I would have thought they'd exhaust all moves trying to get Stamkos back prior to something like this. Unless this is a power move to Stamkos where they go "we only have this amount left man, if you want to stay you need to sign a $3m deal"

That's from @Erik_Erlendsson for those who careRyan McDonagh said he spoke with Stamkos today about returning to #GoBolts, said Stamkos just got off the ice working with Nikita Kucherov, was excited about the news of Mac's returning.

Lot of talk on the TBL side, but on the NSH side....$26m in cap space with $11.8m in dead cap! With no top player really out there in FA, they seem to be big fish hunting via trade this offseason.
Everyone is making the clear connection with the Leafs and Marner, likely centered around Marner/Saros. But if Nashville doesn't even come out of this offseason with that big name, the McDonagh asset management is still Monahan level in my opinion.

For me... the vibe is that Stamkos' is going to do the Toronto thing (or the Ottawa thing - if not)... on major discount.
He's got the cash and the cup rings.
He's coming home.
His wife is an Ontario girl and they have a 5-year old son (come August 2024), (which means kindergarten is on the horizon)... and had that heartbreak of miscarriage.
That girl needs some family (and a Canadian education for their kid).
Stammer & wife are both Markham folk.
Which is crazy because I was just tweeting how Marner & wife are both Markham folk.
But something has to give with the cash-flow in Toronto...
I think the McDonagh thing is major "tell".
Stamkos has likely/probably already informed all his TB teammates that he/wife/son are headed home to Ontario.
(For me - this is as close to a 'lock' as Giroux back to his hometown of Ontario. It's got the family-vibe... he's that style of man.)
As for the comment towards McDonagh return - means nothing.
Hockey players know how to say what people need to hear.
Plus aren’t Stammer and JT best friends?

McDonagh actually requested a trade out. Nashville didn't do the move because they wanted cap space. However, both situations can happen at the same time.

I'm certainly puzzled by this move. However, I think those who feel there is going to be some major moves in TB this summer are likely right, so it's early in the game here. That said, I'm thinking the chances of McDonagh's contract turning out badly for the Bolts is a definite reality.
