PH and I thought we'd try something different this year, so what about a league format that emphasizes drafting parts of NHL teams as a whole. It is sort of a more advanced version of the NHL Wins pool.
Here's how it works:
Each NHL team's Offence (Goals for), Defence (Shots against) and Goaltending (Save %) is available to be drafted. With 32 teams in the NHL, thats 96 options.
The draft will be roughly 80 picks deep, leaving only the absolute worst options untaken. For example, the Toronto Offence will go early, but the Chicago Goaltending will go late if at all. You are free to take multiple parts of one team, no limitations on that.
You draft a team comprised of a set number of Team Offence (GF), Team Defence (SA), and Goaltending (Sv%). You will likely be required to draft a set # of each of these positions. It will be scored rotisserie style, with the 1st place team getting the most points at the end of the year and the last place team getting the fewest per category. So there are only 3 categories (Team GF, Team SA, Sv%).
Notes:
- when you draft a team's O, D, or G, you get ALL of their stats. So if Justus Annunen comes in and plays 2 minutes in one game all season, that will be part of the % if you have Colorado Goaltending. Team Offence is ALL goals for, regardless of if a forward, defenseman or goalie (that would be cool) scores the goal.
- if someone could help us a solid site that tracks team sv% as it changes throughout the year that would be helpful! maybe its even on nhl.com lol
- we are still refining the rules but this is what we have so far.
Draft:
Start date TBD, number of teams will impact # of rounds but goal is to have something like 80 picks in the draft.

IMO, "team defense" should be "Shots Against"... which is a better metric, IMO, of how well a team's skaters limit chances.
"Goals Against" factors in the goalie's sv%... and since you have that as a category, you should not have it lumped in somewhere else as well.
https://www.statmuse.com/nhl/ask?q=n...r+game+2021-22
ESPN should have SV%, here:
https://www.espn.com/nhl/stats/team/...vePct/dir/desc
Note that each team's SV% should be HIGHER than a calculation of (SV/SA) or ((SA-GA)/SA)....
That's because each empty net goal against probably (*should) counts towards GA and as one shot (per) but without the team sporting a goalie.
For example: NYR shows up at .921 sv%... but they have a .919sv% calculated from SV/SA = 2324/2528.
[Well, maybe I'm wrong. The NYR stat sort does show 204 goals given up by their goalies last year: https://www.espn.com/nhl/team/stats/...oalie/name/nyr
Standings check shows NYR gave up 207 goals, so 3 were empty netters.
IDK...]
Hockey-Reference should be good to use for this.
I agree with P7 for D being Shots Against

These are all valid points. We are still tinkering with it haha. This is why we put the thread out before finalizing the rules. The delineation between D and G is the crucial factor isn't it.
Haha, this looks fun, I'm in!
Just thinking this through.....
Will each manager have to have the same number of Team F, Team D and Team G.
I think we have to set it up that way.
If 6 GMs, each could draft 5 of each, 2 remainder of each.
If 7 GMs, each could draft 4 of each, 4 remainder.
If 8 GMs, each could draft 4 of each, 0 remainder.
If 10 GMs, each could draft 3 of each, 2 remainder of each.
If 12 GMs, each could draft 2 of each, 8 remainder of each.
If 14 GMs, each could draft 2 of each, 4 remainder.
If 15... 2 remainder.
If 16 GMs, each could draft 2 of each, 0 remainder.
For this league, I'd actually consider that 7, 14, or 15 is the right number of entrants.
1) You want there to be an even number of picks per GM so that the snaking format is fair.
2) You want to leave some teams (say, Chicago Offense) unpicked... because it sucks to be the 2nd last or last pick of anything and be "stuck" with something.
I'm in... this seems fun and I'm always interested in new formats of leagues.
Plus, I love team defense - so as long as you do "shots against per game" - I'm loving it.
It's really the thing that I believe coaches can MOST control with their coaching.
For me... I'd say 14 or 15 entrants is your ideal numbers.
Then we each pick TWO of Offense, Defense, and GoalieTeam.
^ I agree. I think 7 would the ideal number of participants for this league.
I dug into the archives to find the old website that we used for NHL Wins Pool and was hoping it would have the options for us... it does not.
Anyone else have any ideas of a pool tracker that would track it for us?

Luckily it's basically a simple rotisserie league with 3 cats. We could track it ourselves. Raw #s and per game for GF and SA, plus the current team sv%. And you could display current GP so we know where each team is. It would be great if you wanted to track it regularly Invictus!
And yes there will be a set # of picks by category so that we don't discourage or encourage loading up/avoiding certain categories. Otherwise people will try to just get the minimum and best teams for sv% and SA and call it a day, then load up on Goals for.
Good idea on the games played.
I started working on the spreadsheet. We can scrap it if we find better lol.

One thing is that with only 3 categories the likelihood of ties are higher than usual.

I am working on a spreadsheet that we can use to track this league!
Might need someone to audit it and might need some help with making it as simple as possible!
