Default How would you rank the top 5 - 10 goalies with these cats...

So I am just entering a new HTH league and it has a lot more categories involved than what I am used too.

    There are 8 scoring categories:

Goals (G), Assists (A), Plus/Minus (+/-), Penalty Minutes (PIM), Powerplay Points (PPP), Shorthanded Points (SHP), Shots on Goal (SOG), Hits (HIT)

    and 5 goalie categories:

Wins (W), Goals Against Average (GAA), Saves (SV), Save Percentage (SV%), Shutouts (SHO)

We haven't set up the draft yet and I don't know where I will be drafting but just trying to be ready and be informed.

Just wondering what the top goalies would be using these categories and if I am drafting near the end of the round in a snake draft, would you ever consider taking 2 top goalies in this type of format with your first 2 picks? I would never usually consider this type of strategy but with 5 categories strictly dedicated to 2 roster spots, is it smart or crazy?

Was just curious about the top goalies and what kind of strategies people utilize in this type of draft with that many categories.

    Thanks

I think burning your first two picks on goalies is crazy. Goalies are way too volatile.

On the flip side, 5/13 categories is a huge weighting for goalies. I would definitely try to snag one elite tender early, grabbing an elite skater (Seguin, Laine, Eichel, Karlsson, etc.) and either Vas or Helle at the turn would have you in a great position I think.

I know this is open advice, but hard to give much more without knowing # of teams or positions.

It's the kind of advice I was looking for. Drafting is kind of hard to predict and you have to make decisions based on who is available when your turn comes around.

How many goalie starts a night? You don?t want to start the run on goalies but you don?t want to be left behind. I?d probably snag a goalie with my 2nd or 3rd pick and if it?s a 2 start or you?re at the end of the snake maybe back to back otherwise I wouldn?t worry about a 2nd goalie til deeper in the draft.

You need a minimum of 4 goalie starts a week.

That makes sense. Unfortunately, the commissioner is still organizing the league. Maybe I'll leave the question until I have all the details of the league. Thanks guys.

    Yeah probably the best idea.

That said, one piece of advice I would suggest is not only focus on the number of categories, but the type and frequency of production in those categories. For example, you have five goalie categories but one of them is Shutouts. In a H2H league (assuming category wins e.g. each category worth the same), how often will one of your goalies get a shutout in a given week? Infrequently, so more often than not that category will end up as a tie. So, in reality, there are four goalie categories, not five.

My top-10 looks something like this. The top-4 are really close in my mind, Helly is kinda tier 2A and the next 5 are close as well.
    1. Vasilevsky
    2. Bobrovsky
    3. Holtby
    4. Rinne
    - GAP -
    5. Hellebuyck (maybe tier 1)
    6. Dubnyk
    7. Rask
    8. Raanta
    9. Fleury
    10. Price

I would be looking at grabbing 1 goalie in the 2nd or 3rd round. Goalies are worth a lot but also very volatile, if this is a league with playoffs even more so. I prefer to draft elite skaters early, as they are usually much more consistent then goalies which fluctuate a ton year to year. For example, Price could do 10-12th goalie this year, turn it around and lead the league in SVs, SV% and SO.
12 team H-2-H 1 year league, daily roster changes, 3 goalie start minimum/week
    2xC, 2xRW, 2xLW, 4xD, 3xUtil, 2xG, 5 Bench
G, A, P, PIM, PPP, SHP, GWG, SOG, Hits, W, SV%, GAA, SVs
    C: C. Keller, C. Mittelstadt, B. Nelson, R. Strome,
    LW: K. Connor, B. Tkachuk, J. Gaudreau, J. Marchessault, E. Rodrigues, A. Lafreniere
    RW: K. Fiala, J. Bratt, T. Jeannot V. Arvidsson
    D: R. Josi, J. Trouba, E. Gustafsson,
    G: L. Thompson, F. Gustavsson, V. Vanecek

I make that 7 skater cats, 4 goalie cats, and 2 random cats (shutouts & plus-minus).

I would be more likely to take no goalies with my first two picks than to take one, and that's especially true if it's some form of keeper or dynasty. We have essentially no currently reliable elite goalies right now. Holtby was one until last year, Price was one before the injuries and the Suckitude of the Habs.

YOu definitely wait until the # of teams, categories, etc, are defined for a good answer.

I wouldn't use either of my first two picks on a goalie, regardless if 5/13 are goalie categories. Take out shutouts right off the bat because they are so rare, you'll notice that category will be a tie most weeks. Without knowing your draft position I would go after an elite forward and an elite defensemen. You'd be surprised how far a Karlsson, Hedman or Burns can get you. After them, there is a solid middle tier of defensemen available, and then the rest. I want one or even two of Karlsson, Hedman or Burns if possible.

As far as rankings goalies, good luck. They are easily the hardest position to rank and predict. I'd attempt a top 10 ranking for you but I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. Good luck.
