kopitar won two cups. JT can't make the playoffs in consecutive years. I'd rather own Kopitar in real life, Maybe that's just me.
If he puts up his 3rd consecutive season of 70-ish pts and they miss the playoffs again - I don't think he should get more than 8
But this is NYI - they need to overpay to keep stars (even though players have walked from better offers in NY) So that's what they will do. I think JT stays and agree 8yrs 10m per

with marleau and next year thornton off the books I've been wondering if SJ becomes a place JT would hang his hat .I think he likes his privacy so a team that can offer that and a chance to win is the combo I sense that he'd look for if he wanted to leave isles .
contract ? 9+ for 8 or 7 years is my guess.
I give him 5% chance to re-sign with the Isles.
Reminds me of Kovalchuk.
The team hasn't been able to do well with him at $5m.
How can they possibly do well with him at $10m?
And what superstar re-signs with a sub-average team when he finally has a chance to make bank???
I think we've gotten way too used to superstars re-signing and think that's the default.
There ARE some teams that simply aren't attractive hockey places... NYI is one. (TB actually is a cool-place to be, good lockerroom & management)
As for the Leafs... still possible!
They've got 13players signed for 2018- at $45m.
That leaves 10 contracts for $30m.
Bozak is UFA, JVR is UFA, Lupul, Fehr, Moore all come off the books.
Horton likely still LTIR (discount that as well, probably).
Kadri's contract is still attractive.. and they could easily move him (for picks or ELC player) if they felt they could get Tavares.
Only major RA to re-sign is Levio & Nylander.
If you look at Toronto's cap structure... they are actually very similar to the Oilers.
They've got 3 guys in the $4.5m-$6.5m space & 4D signed for $3m-$5m. Goalie at around $5m. (Talbot might fetch MORE with another big season).
So, Toronto can still make a 7yr x $11m offer to Tavares. (McDavid-ish)
Toronto's BEST shot at maximum return on cap structure is in the final years of Matthews/Marner ELC -that's 2018-2019.
Don't think their management doesn't know this.
Though short contracts are not advised (by agents), guaranteed money being better.
Maybe TOR offers Tavares 2yr @ $15m/yr. (20% of a $75m cap)
I... still think they (TOR) are in play.
He's definitely a $10m+ player in the NHL.
Just because he hasn't put up the points lately, GMs know this.
There is no way I can see him signing for less unless he LOVES a certain team/lockerroom and has to take a discount to fit in.
One team that intrigues me is San Jose.
They are a bit starved for high-end talent, but there is a certain CANADA vibe there with Couture, Burns, Vlasic... and Pavelski (WI guy) might as well be Canadian!
I think San Jose re-signing Thornton for 1-year is a bit of a reason to speculate that SJ is planning to take a run at Tavares.
They were oh-so-close to a Cup with the team a couple years ago with Thornton... and Tavares is a notch upgrade there, for sure.
My guesses:
TOR, 2yr $15m/per.
SJ, 7yr $10-$11m/per.
Thats a train wreck of a franchise
The stadium situation alone is cancer
IF JT wants stability and a chance to build something special and win a cup he should leave
Which team wouldn't want him ?
I didn't ask which teams couldn't afford him...
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.
JT is worth atleast 10M per year. I doubt there will be a hometown discount

G- Halak, C.Anderson, Mason
I neglected to mention that I think Anaheim is a factor franchise too. They have 18 megabucks to spend
a few old guys coming off the books too.
They also have the recent finals history plus a very solid blueline
nice kids to backfill the pro roster as well
Socal is some nice living

My guess is Toronto Maple Leafs 7 years $11,250,000 per
$91M total value has been rumored lately, so that would mean $13M AAV with a 7-year deal.
