[Trade] Phaneuf to Ottawa in monster deal

As per the Leafs, here’s their cap situation (and based off this yrs cap max).
This yr, they now have 4.8725mill in cap space, next yr they’ll have 29.89mill in cap space, and in the 2017-18 season, they have 48.17mill in cap space. They only have Gardiner, Bozak, JvR, Uncle Leo and Lupul in 2017-18 season (this includes Gleason’s buyout and Kessel’s retention too).

D ranked in cap hit:
Gardiner (4.05), Cowen (3.1), Robidas (3), Polak (2.75), Hunwick (1.2), Rielly (0.894), Marincin (0.7), Corrado (0.6325). Wow.

i dont see what all the fuss is about.

trade helps both teams a lot.

leafs get rid of a terrible longterm contract. greening/cowen/michalek are all short term, leafs will still suck when they are on the books. they add a good pick and prospect as well.

sens D is atrocious. adding phaneuf makes them a better team. getting rid of those dead-weights also makes them a better team. they addressed a big need and didn't give up much to do so.


sens win short term. leafs win long term (assuming they dont waste the cap space gained).

win-win.

How times have changed in 1 year...before it would have been Kane ++ for Stamkos but now I'm considering a Stamkos/Krejci for Kane.

Bob McKenzie was on Vancouver’s TSN 1040 on Tuesday morning.

On if he thinks this is a bit of a lock for the Leafs to sign Steven Stamkos as a UFA because they now have the cap space to do it:

“No, not at all. And for a couple of reasons here.

“No. 1, whether they traded Dion Phaneuf or not, there’s no doubt in my mind if Stamkos goes to July 1, the Leafs were going to take a really good run at Steven Stamkos. That’s with or without Phaneuf. So yeah, if he’s a free agent on July 1, I fully expect the Toronto Maple Leafs to go in there and give it their best pitch and see if it works. But they didn’t have to trade Phaneuf to do that. It certainly makes it easier to digest, and they would have had to do other things. If they were able to sign Stamkos on July 1, then would have to look at other moves to make room for him.

“But the second part of that is does Steven Stamkos want to play in Toronto? I don’t know that he does. I know that Leafs fans assume that he does. But I think there’s often times a disconnect on that.

Cap matters when you want to sign more players because thats what the GMs have to worry about. Salary only matters to the owners pockets.

And then we have the Senators. We are not a cap team because of the owner's pockets. Even guys on LITR are going to affect our budget. Phaneuf doesn't mess up our cap situation badly. We are paying less than we were, to now be a better team.

with Phaneuf now on their payroll, the Sens only have four Dmen signed past this season (Phaneuf, Karlsson, Methot and Borowiecki). Zibanejad, Lazar and Pageau come up the year after that.

Its easy to sit here today and say they aren't a cap team but they have some kids who will be looking for money in the next two seasons. That $7M cap hit for the next five seasons past this one isn't going to look quite as good sooner than you think.

No team gets to keep everyone. I'd be surprised if there were a lot of teams that have their entire defense locked up long term. Lock up Ceci next and we're in the same boat as most teams. If we can get that, it's Karlsson, Methot, Ceci and Phaneuf locked up for a few years, that's our top-4 defensemen right there and it's pretty good. Haven't been able to say that for a long time. Hoffman's gonna get paid for sure, if not by us than by someone else, but he is still an RFA so there's effectively limits on how much. I feel like Zibby is probably gonna get a raise, but Lazar and Pageau are probably not gonna cost us a whole lot. We've also got Neil and Phillips coming off the books. Believe it or not that's like $4.5mil right there.

Also I feel like people are overestimating the crappiness of Phaneuf's contract term. He's only 35 at the end. It'll probably sting a bit for 2 seasons but a lot of guys are serviceable at 35.
