Josh Bailey, the former 1st round pick 9th overall highly touted offensive prospect, was ruined by being brought up too early and not given a chance to grow his overall game at a proper level. He has struggled with that very issue in the NHL being an offensive force while being responsible defensively. For that reason he hasn't gotten over 40 points in a season. His junior career started slowly gathering only 87 points in the first four seasons. His final year he put on a clinic getting 96 points in 67 games played. This shows that once he adjusted to the league he finally could use his offensive skills to full effect, now in his ninth pro season he has become the two way forward he needs to be to survive in today’s NHL. Look for him to break out and get close to 60 points next season with the now threat for a Stanley cup that is the Islanders.
His points-per-game has steadily grown in the last five years showing great offensive progression, very much like his junior numbers. Take a look at his shot numbers: 102 in 2010/11, 104 in 2011/12, 76 in 2012/13, 98 in 2013/14, and 133 in 2014/15. He needs to continue to fire the puck at net to have success at the NHL level. It’s no surprise Bailey has set a career high in goals this season his shot totals went up by 35. His power-play usage has curiously gone down over the last five years: 2010/11 2:24 PP TOI, 2011/12 1:13 PP TOI, 2012/13 1:17 PP TOI, 2013/14 1:49 PP TOI, 2014/15 1:40 PP TOI. Hopefully he can play his way into a a consistent number 1/2 situation where he gets close to two power-play minutes a game.
