    Default My last keeper?

It seems like I'm just as lost this year as I was last year when it comes to my baseball keepers. Though I know that this time around my keepers are much better. KEEP 12. Categories are here:

Hitting Catcher Interference (Hitter) (CI) 0.5
Hitting Hit For The Cycle (Cyc) 5
Hitting Triple Plays Fielded (TP) 5
    Hitting Grand Slams (Sl) 2
Hitting Runs Batted In (RBI) 1
    Hitting Runs Scored (R) 1
    Hitting Stolen Bases (SB) 1
Hitting Hit By Pitches (HBP) 0.5
    Hitting Walks (BB) 0.5

    Pitching Hits Allowed (H) -0.25
Pitching Home Runs Allowed (HR) -0.25
    Pitching Walks Allowed (BB) -0.25
    Pitching Losses (L) -0.5

With rosters similar to major leagues

    My keepers are:
Rizzo/Altuve/Davis/Castro/Yelich/Melky/Arenado/Bryant/Gomez/Hutchinson/Richards and one last spot for either Cashner/Castellanos/Gattis/McHugh/Griffin/Kenta Maeda/Glasnow

My draft picks kick ass, being heavily slanted towards the early rounds.

    1. Who should be my final keeper?
    2. I have the chance to acquire Gausman or Wily Peralta for a couple of middling picks. Would either of them slot into my 12?

    Thanks

Gausman or McHugh would be my top two picks. McHugh played great last yr and is still young for a pitcher at 27. With Feldman still the Astros “Ace” (I still think Dallas Keuchel should be) in the near future we could see McHugh move his way into SP2 with an injury or fast slump by a 32yr old pitcher (Feldman). But with that level of pitchers for your 12th keeper, it’s just a crapshoot really on who will do well. McHugh at least had a successful yr last yr that can be used as a “trade value increaser”.

Also a tidbit for a last round flier pick for a potential SP, Carlso Martinez in STL. He has expressed interest in being moved to a winning team (more wins, better cast around him) and the Phillies are demanding CM go back to them if STL wants Cole Hamels (SP3-4 on that team I think). CM has crazy raw talent and may be a prime candidate to be a great k/9 pitcher.

Sounds like Gausman/McHugh are close, so no point in giving up picks. Good tip on Martinez, thanks

Last year I finished 8th of 16th, though I tanked the last two weeks to drop an extra draft slot. I would have been 7th. I was 2nd in hitting, and 15th in pitching. Unbelievable. But people overcharge for their pitchers and I'm left picking up the scraps and hope some turn out. Last year, Hutch/Richards/McHugh all turned out for me. Cashner may have, but he got hurt too much. If my three can improve this year, and I find one more diamond in the rough, it should turn things around.

If you want the highest ceiling, it's Cashner. He could leave you pulling your hair out though if he continues his DL stints. As the last keeper though, I'd roll the dice.

Gattis for me. He should have good numbers from the C position. Power and decent average and more importantly 600 AB.

Cashner would be my second choice but he doesn't have elite SO numbers or any other numbers to show he's more than a 3/4 fantasy pitcher.

Draft young arms like Syndergaard, Walker, Brady, Appel, Grey and hope a few put up elite numbers. The goal is the best team in September not April

    Isn't Gattis DH this year?

DH or OF. But at least for this year he will still have catcher eligibility.

He won't be catching which is why he'll get 600 AB. At worst he's a one year fix as a C though he might catch enough to retain eligibility (days off for the regular HOU catcher).

EDIT: If he isn't C eligible in your league he is definitely not in the keeper conversation.

Here are my keepers, whittled down some more. 16 teams, full slate of categories, I have tons of high draft picks. Keep 12, ranked in order of my preference:
CF Gomez, Carlos CF - MIL
    1B Rizzo, Anthony 1B - CHC
    2B Altuve, Jose 2B - HOU
    3B Arenado, Nolan 3B - COL
    3B Bryant, Kris (R) 3B - CHC
SS Castro, Starlin SS - CHC
    3B Davis, Chris 1B,3B - BAL
LF Yelich, Christian LF,CF - MIA
SP Richards, Garrett SP - LAA
SP Hutchison, Drew SP - TOR
SP McHugh, Collin SP - HOU
    RF Melky Cabrera

And then the rest after I dropped about 10 guys, ranked in order of my preference:
SP Cashner, Andrew SP - SD
    C Gattis, Evan C - HOU
    3B Castellanos, Nick 3B - DET
SP Griffin, A.J. SP - OAK
SP Buchholz, Clay SP - BOS
SP Edwards, C.J. SP - CHC
UT Hardy, J.J. SS - BAL
SP Glasnow, Tyler (R) SP - PIT
CF Fowler, Dexter CF - CHC
SS Gordon, Nick (R) SS - MIN
    3B Peterson, D.J. (R) 3B - SEA
SP Maeda, Kenta SP - (N/A)

I'm really just considering Cashner or Gattis here. Anything way out of whack that you see?

I'd go Cashner over Hutchison. Proven vs unproven. Cashner also plays in an easier division + better park. Padres are improved as well.

With your league settings, don't think Gattis is really that valuable. I'd stick with everything else the way it is. If you have room for movement, I'd try to uprgrade your SP. Really like your staff, but a bona fide ace would be nice to hold it down.

Good team though, you should be stoked.

I'd keep both Cashner and Gattis over McHugh personally.

Between Gattis and Cashner....I'm taking Cashner.

Your team looks like it should have a solid shot at competing this year, especially if the Cubs take another step forward.

Thanks everyone. What makes it tough is that the other 15 GMs overrate starting pitching. So not only does that mean that scraps are what's left in the draft (last year the top pitcher drafted was Cashner, by me), but it means that I can't acquire one. The following offers have been shot down:

    Cashner and Castellanos for
    1. Stroman
    2. Wheeler
    3. Zimmerman
    4. Cueto (I added a 2nd round pick to the offer, draft is 13 rounds)
edit: I still have two offers out there outstanding. One is for Shields. One is for deGrom.

This is my attempt at an ace. Not even trying for an elite ace. Just an ace in the same ballpark as my Richards. Not getting anywhere.

But last year, just picking from the scraps, I managed to get Richards, Cashner, Hutchinson and McHugh when I drafted/claimed about a dozen pitchers. So doing that again, if I can pluck a couple more that way, then I'll be set. My position players are gold, so I have that going for me

With health, Cashner can deliver #2 upside, which is what you're looking for. If you're looking to do a 2-1 package you might have to go slightly older guys like Iwakuma, Gio Gonzalez, Mat Latos, Lance Lynn. If you're looking for possible keeper material, maybe someone like Chris Archer?

Dropped nine more guys, and set my keepers. Barring a last minute deal acceptance (not likely, given the track record), here are my keepers. And thanks - your feedback helped me tweak this:

CF Gomez, Carlos CF - MIL
    1B Rizzo, Anthony 1B - CHC
    2B Altuve, Jose 2B - HOU
    3B Arenado, Nolan 3B - COL
    3B Bryant, Kris (R) 3B - CHC
SS Castro, Starlin SS - CHC
    3B Davis, Chris 1B,3B - BAL
LF Yelich, Christian LF,CF - MIA
SP Richards, Garrett SP - LAA
SP Hutchison, Drew SP - TOR SP Cashner, Andrew SP - SD
SP McHugh, Collin SP - HOU
RF Melky Cabrera C Gattis, Evan C - HOU

    Which means my final drops:
SP Hutchison, Drew SP - TOR
    RF Melky Cabrera
    3B Castellanos, Nick 3B - DET

What sucks is that I gave up a player and a middle pick for Melky. So that was a waste. Ah well.

Earlier today I was turned down for - Cashner, Hutchinson, Castellanos for Lester + garbage I was going to drop anyway.
