I'm not sure either. Gonchar is a liability these days, not sure he is even good enough to man a PP anymore (Dallas didn't think so, they used Daley/Goligoski). Plus he will take away valuable playing time from Tinordi or Beaulieu, one of whom may go down to the AHL for the rest of the year. Thankfully he's in the last year of his contract.

I'm not sure what to think of this too. I was under the impression he was done, and at 5M$ for a 4th Dmen, it's a bit expensive imo. Second PP pairing with Beaulieu? He's only got one year left at least. This also frees up a spot up front.
I'm just not sure what happens up front with Bournival out and Bourque (apparently) demoted.

With the cap space now - I don't see Bourque coming back up from the AHL unless we make another move.

I agree. I'm hoping they're just getting rid of deadwood anyway they can.
You can't have "no excuses" as your motto and keep dressing guys like Bourque and Moen every night. You can't bring back Bourque unless he really tears it up in the AHL and shows he not going to take ti for granted anymore.
Bourque was a bigger the problem because we expected him to produce and score goals.
Moen was different as whenever he got points, it was extra as he was more of a defensive player, so less pressure if you want. But I think we all knew Moen's time was up.
So as of right now Drayson Bowman is the 12th forward with no designated 13th forward. Bournival with one arm might be a good candidate.

I posted this on the trade thread, but I'll add to it here.
I like the deal for Montreal. Gives them a better option on their second powerplay unit than Gilbert/Emelin/Beaulieu. Gets rid of Moen, who has been horrible for the Habs the last couple of years. They save some term on a deal.
Plus, it gives them a roster spot for a rookie/UFA next season so someone like Hudon can make the team.

Bergevin is pretty proactive in finding ways to get players out the door. In his first year he did the Ryder/Cole swap, this summer he did the Briere/Parenteau swap and now he gets ride of the final year of Moen's contract. Whether or not Gonchar turns into anything remains to be seen.

I wonder if Markov and/or Emelin know Gonchar well enough to have been consulted before the deal? I mean Gonchar is pretty much done, but maybe he still has something left in the tank? Experience, offensive ability and defensive depth only help if you want to make a playoff run.
