I think he will be an offensive guy, but I also think it's a few years down the road.
Hey guys dont know much about Ekblad but due to recent developments in my league he is being underrated and I might have an opportunity to draft him.
Im in a points only pool though, will Ekblad be an offensive style of player? I dont know much about him and wonder how long will he take to start putting up decent points?

I think he will be an offensive guy, but I also think it's a few years down the road.
I wouldn't call him an "offensive defensman" because that would be insulting to how strong he is defensively. I would say that he's going to grow into one of the best 2-way d-men in the league in time, but along with that he is definitely going to score some points. He's also in a great situation because he should be hitting his prime right at the same time as the rest of those talented prospects in Florida do too.
I think he starts out immediately on the Panthers and plays pretty well this year - 20-25pts? Long term he could be the next Hedman or Shea Weber.

The Hedman comparison is accurate, but I think that's the top end. For points I'd be overjoyed if he started like Lindholm, 30 points with room to grow. I think he's going to start off better than guys like Hamilton and (obviously) Larsson, but it will depend if the other Florida youngsters step it up like TB before he can be that kind of player.

I watched him play a lot last year, and am not just saying this because I am a Barrie Colts season ticket holder,
But I hope he doesn't stay up for the whole year. 10 games get his feet wet, but he would do well with a year of dominating the OHL. He needs to learn to use his shot and shoot more, as well dominate physically. Another year at the WJC would do him well. Yes he is mature, and poised for his age, but another year would do him well for his growth. He isn't as dominant as Seth Jones was last year, so I see him if he does stay up in the NHL being under his first by 10 or so points.
Just my 2 cents.
But in the future he is going to be great, but I see a 3 year or more ramp till he starts to become relevant in a points only league.
Good Luck

He could post decent offensive numbers this year but it's tough to pencil him in for anything spectacular. Better to be safe and pessimistic with rookies, especially dmen.

if he is already underrated and you are just asking if he is a wise draft....then the answer is yes....i actually own him and have soaked in as much tape of him as possible....i think he is going to be a 50 point stud regular with a ton of opportunity in Miami or Seattle...lol......Think Petrangello good with Ekblad....and he will get there faster than most...this guys is always a couple years ahead of his competition....hes proven that already.

This kid has all the tools to be a first pairing Dman in the NHL. I think the offense will take a while but he could end up being a Chris Pronger level of player. Think production in the 30s for 2-4 years with a very good chance to progress into a regular 45+ pt guy, but I don't think he will be an offensive powerhouse in the way that a guy like Karlsson is.
As it has been said dmen take longer to develop. So if you know that going in its fine. They usually have to work on d aspect of game first before turning to offense side of the game. Points should come more in 3rd or fourth year. Some d get points sooner. I think it's easy when team is good already before new d comes in. Like the Ducks vs Panthers.

Ekblad has tons of potential and will be a good one, although not elite offensively. I liken him to a potential Pietrangelo/Seabrook hybrid. He'll end up a steady 40-50 point player who always gets double digits in goals. When he hits his stride, a dependable season for him will be 15g/31a/46pts.
Not as high on Ekblad as everyone else. A product of a weak draft with few high-end prospects. Physically matured faster than everyone else and not going to be able to physically dominate in NHL like he did in OHL. Reminds me more of Luke Schenn (with better puck moving skills) than Victor Hedman.
So would you guys take H Lindholm over Ekblad at this point, with an eye on this season and the future as well?
