Wow, tough one. For me it is Gordie Howe but it's hard not to see an argument for Stevie Y too.
ESPN has been doing a "Face of the Franchise" series.
Most are pretty obvious picks.
But Howe vs. Yzerman for Detroit?
That's a pretty good showdown.

Who do you guys pick?

Growing up watching Yzerman play against the leafs, and play for Canada I’d say he’s the face of Detroit to me. But that’s cause I never grew up watching Howe.

For me it would be Yzerman, because he was there when I started watching hockey. Both great players, but different generations so opinions will vary on the matter.
Yzerman for me, as well.
Howe is legend... legend, don't get me wrong.
Yzerman won 3 Stanley Cups... but he won those in the years of 26 to 30 team NHL leagues.
Howe won 4 Stanley Cups... but all those are in the 6 team NHL years.
I think history probably favours Howe, but like most of you here I grew up in the Yzerman era and so for me that's the face of the Red Wings.
I'd have a harder time answering if it was a Yzerman vs Lidstrom debate!

I think it has to be Gordie Howe. Steve Yzerman was an incredible player, but Howe was an absolute legend. Had he played for any number of other teams, Yzerman would be the clear franchise face, but not so in Detroit.

I think Yzerman wins due to be the more recent of the two excellent choices. No real wrong answer here, but Yzerman was seen by this generation.

I grew up watching Yzerman, never saw Howe of course. Yzerman is probably the face of the more "modern" Red Wings, but then again what about Lidstrom? The fact there can be a question kinda answers this for me.
Howe is a legend. There are plenty of people who say he's the best player ever. Howe is who I think of when I think of the Red Wings, even with never seeing him play and Yzerman winning all of those Cups right when I started watching hockey.

Gordie Howe, because he did it all for his team. Stevie had Bob Probert to protect him, Gordie protected himself and still scored goals and produced assists.
I may be a little biased because I had the honour of fishing with him a couple years ago. He was an absolute treat to be around.
If someone could assist me with uploading pics on here, that would be awesome.
