Re: Net Trading for the Year
I'm not including offseason trading before the draft. A little context, I was 2nd in the league last season, and finished as runner up in the playoffs. I had a pretty strong core of keepers, probably one of the best in the league. We also have a farm team of 12 players under 110 games played or 80 for goalies. They can be moved in and out of the farm system at will, so they have significant value in our league. Having the ability to move a significant rookie player like MacKinnon or Trouba from the farm team to the regular team without taking up a reserve spot is very valuable. It's a keep 10 (with 12 on the farm) in a 16 team multi-cat points based bi-weekly H2H league on fantrax. Made 5 trades this year. Usually make a lot more trades but my team was the strongest one in the league and I didn't need to fool around with it much. Plus I got some wicked waiver wire pickups early on after a slow start (2 wins, then 7 straight losses) gave me high priority (picked up Girardi and Voracek off of it). Deep roster too with 4 at each forward position, 6 dman, 2 goalies, 6 reserve spots and 12 farm team spots (that are often at least half filled wiht rookie NHLers).
1st Trade - Traded my Alfy for Yakupov when Yakupov started out terribly. Yakupov owner wanted a winger back, and I figured I could probably flip Yakupov to a rebuilding team after a few weeks (plus we had two expansion teams who could make that kind of move).
2nd Trade - About a month later I moved out Filip Forsberg, Yakupov and Justin Schutlz plus a 2015 7th round draft pick for Dustin Byfuglien and Mike Richards. Richards totally busted for me but Byfuglien is a stud in our league, especially once he gained RW status. Other team was an expansion team and wanted some high potential players in Yakupov and Schultz plus a high end farm player in Forsberg. I was moving up the standings as a top contender coming on after a slow start and didn't need to wait on Schultz and Yaks potential.
3rd Trade - My Berra for Markstrom - Other team wanted to lock up Calgary's goaltending, and with only Varlamov and Lundqvist as my goalies, I wanted to make a longer term move hoping Markstrom got some starts. Long before he was traded. Mostly a lateral move for both teams.
4th Trade - Ben Scrivens and a 2014 11th rounder for my 2014 3rd rounder and 2014 9th rounder. Other owner recently acquired Quick to go with Bobrovsky and Rinne. We have a 3 goalie limit (and 3 on the farm team) so he had no space to play Scrivens. This was a fairly cheap price for a potential starter in our league and his high save total gave me a nice third option who will still be eligible for my farm come next season.
5th trade - Traded out Mike Richards, Steve Oleksy, Kevin Connaughton, 2015 2nd rounder, 2015th 5th rounder, 2014th 11 rounder for Patric Elias and Torey Krug. Krug is hugely valuable as a top 30 dman in our league and still farm eligible. Elias helped me fix my weak LW although he won't be a keeper.
Final tally has me trading out: Alfredsson, Yakupov, Forsberg, Schultz, Yakupov, Berra, M. Richards, Oleksy, Connaughton, 2014 3rd, 2014 9th, 2014 11th (not my own), 2015th 2nd, 2015 5th, 2015 7th
For
Received: Byfuglien, Elias, Scrivens, Markstrom, Krug
Of the players I traded, only Forsberg and Connaughton would have been kept on my farm team, and none of the others would have been kept in any fashion. Byfuglien will be a full keeper for me, and Krug, Scrivens and Markstrom will be kept on my farm team.
I ended up finishing first overall by a fairly healthy margin, and look like the odds on favorite to win it all. Plus I didn't hurt myself too much for next year with minimal picks being given up.
