Very cool post. When I get a chance I send a list. I think when we can do the 2000's the majority will be number 1's as the scouting has improved so drastically.
I'm sitting here watching hockey and started thinking... who is the best player from each draft? I'll post what I think, feel free to comment and post yours.
1990: Martin Brodeur (20th)
1991: Scott Niedermayer (3rd)
1992: Sergei Gonchar (14th)
1993: Chris Pronger (2nd)
1994: Daniel Alfredsson (133rd)
1995: Jarome Iginla (11th)
1996: Zdeno Chara (56th)
1997: Marian Hossa (12th)
1998: Brad Richards (64th)
1999: Ryan Miller (138th)
Interesting. Not one number one pick. I'd love to do the 2000's but I think it's too soon for the last half of the decade. This is all my opinion, of course.

grammar Nazi
Noun
(slang, idiomatic) 1. A person who habitually corrects or criticizes the language usage of others, especially in situations where it is unnecessary, e.g. an informal conversation.
Notes: This behavior is almost always found in people with very low I.Q's, whom have a very low sense of self worth. Impotence is also commonly linked to Grammar Nazi's.
Only one I highly disagree on is 1998 where I would put Datsyuk instead of Richards
H2H 12 Team/12 Keeper League. Cats: G, A, P, +/-, PIM, PPP, HITS, BS, SOG, W, GAA, SV%, SO, Saves

G- Holtby, Bishop, Hellebuyck, Vasilevskiy

I'd also take Thornton over Hossa in 97. Just seems to be much more durable and has made everyone around him better
Love the idea behind the post.

G - Rask, Schneider, Rinne
1999 - I think I'd take the Sedins and Zetterberg over Miller.
jsender beat me to it, but definitely Datsyuk over Richards for 1998
1997 - Hard to argue with Hossa, but I think Luongo and Thornton are worth mentioning as well.
1991 - Niedermeyer's probably the best if only for his durability, but Lindros and Forsberg are pretty close.
1990 - Jagr or Brodeur, so hard to choose.

Very cool post. I'm sure we could do 2000-05 too
I actually missed Datsyuk... I'd take him over Richards any day!
I struggled with Niedermayer-Lindros-Forsberg. In the end Niedermayer won because he played the game at such a high level for so long. Lindros and Forsberg were both better at times, but their careers were cut short by injuries.
Also, Hossa-Thornton-Luongo was close too, but in the end I thought "who would I want on my team? who would I want playing for me if my team was up a goal in game 7 of the SC finals?" Hossa wins.

2007: Kane
2008: Stamkos
the rest well, there's still time.

So Neidermayer gets the nod for longevity and durability, yet Hossa gets the nod for being the best player in game 7 today? Contradicting ourselves a bit no?
Just breaking your balls... I would pick Neidermayer as well, but if you're looking at the entire body of work , it's hard not to take Thornton as much as I despise him for being a soft player.
Great post! It's probably too soon to draw any concrete conclusions for the 2000+ classes, but would still be lots of fun.
Lol... I see your point, but I stand by my picks! Hossa's been good enough for long enough to beat Thornton IMO. Plus, I just like the way Hossa plays and I don't like how Thornton plays.
As far as Neidermayer goes, if not for Lidstrom he'd probably have a few more Norris trophies but that was the most difficult decision, since I would probably take Lindros or Forsberg at their prime over him. Scotty was damn good though, and for a real long time.

I'll take a stab at the 2000's.
2000: Lundqvist (205th)
2001: Kovalchuk (1st)
2002: Nash (1st)
2003: Getzlaf (19th) Jesus that was a SOLID first round!
2004: Ovechkin (1st)
2005: Crosby (1st)
2006: Toews (3rd)
2007: Kane (1st)
2008: Stamkos (1st) Stamkos has 204 NHL goals... the next closest from his draft class? Josh Bailey with 52.
After that it gets a little dicey... You have to figure Tavares (1st) is a shoe-in. I would bet that Seguin becomes the best from 2010.

2008 - Right now it's Stamkos for sure, but come back in three to five years and we might be thinking long and hard about Karlsson.
2006 - I'll take Backstrom over Toews, and I'm pretty sure coming into this season there would have been a large chunk of people saying Giroux over the both of them. As consistently solid as Toews has been, He has never had a point per game season. Backstrom and Giroux each have a 90+ point season to their name.
2005 - How about the best guy not names Crosby? lol. Price or Letang probably.
2004 - I'd probably go with Malkin just because of OV's struggles recently. It's still pretty darn close though.
2000 - This one's pretty easy, given teh fact that he's arguably the top goalie of his generation - Rick DiPietro, .

I can't agree with that. Toews has a Stanley Cup, a Conn Smythe, Olympic Gold, and I believe he was voted the best forward in that same Olympic tournament too, wasn't he? He's also the best captain in the NHL and (yes, I know my man-crush is showing) other than Sidney Crosby, is the first player I would choose to build a team around right now.
Other than a single 100-point season, Backstrom hasn't done a whole lot. In fact, I'd bet that if it were Toews playing with Ovie at that point in time, he would have a 100-point season to his credit. I would take Giroux over Backstrom, but not over Toews. Offense isn't everything. If Toews wasn't such a great leader and as responsible defensively, he'd probably score more but it's not like he doesn't score. He's always been close to a PPG player.

The Blackhawks have a Stanley Cup and Team Canada has an Olympic Gold. Adam Burrish has his name on the Stanley Cup too but I don't think that makes him better than anybody. That isn't to try and take anything away from Toew's role as a part of those teams, and the fact that he led Team Canada in scoring in 2010 and put up 29 points in 22 games during the Hawk's Cup run are certainly to his credit, but to try and say he's a better player because he's been on winning teams doesn't jive for me. Stamkos hasn't won a Cup, so does that mean Toews > Stamkos?
As far as Toews vs. Backstrom, we'll never know whether or not Toews would have had a 100 point season that year. What I do know is that he's never even had an 80 point season, and that's playing with guys like Kane, Sharp, and Hossa. Right now I'll take the guy who has proven he can get to that level over the guy who hasn't. Maybe five years from now we'll look back and Toews will be a consistent 80 point player and Backstrom never gets back to being a point per game player. I doubt it, but who knows?
Just to be fair, I think the intagibles Toews brings are huge, and even though I'd take Backstrom over him it's pretty darn close.
