Purely speculation on my part, but beyond maintenance, maybe a bit of a wake-up call. Yes he leads the D corps with three points, and is second in plus/minus, but he's been second or third pairing for a while now. Not what your expecting from him if your the Stars.
I'll expand on this a bit more here shortly in the Stars thread.
EDIT: Nevermind. Misinterpreted a statistical trend that I was going to expound upon.

It looked lopsided to me the day it was announced.
It had a lot to do with the f-ed up financial situation at the time with the previous ownership. They needed a blueliner but couldn't afford to pay for a top-flight one.
Basically bargain-hunting gone bad. This is one I'm sure that Nieuwendyk would like to forget (along with cashiering Tippett for Crow).
