I initial thought.
Bye bye parity!
I was just doing some thinking about what sort of financial situation would be created if the NHLPA, or specifically the CBA didn't exist. All I keep coming back to is some owners tripping over themselves to give ridiculously big contracts to players in an attempt to ice a competitive team. I can imagine the elite getting paid better than they are now or under a new 50/50 CBA. I do think it could negatively impact the 4th line guys or fringe NHLers.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

No parity and ultra-big bucks for the top end guys is about the worst version of the NHL I can imagine (if that's indeed what would happen with no NHLPA ... I' not 100% that's true).
I would cease watching the NHL for sure in that case. I've slogged through 20 years of watching the Oilers be garbage and if that team were to lose all of their best young players right now I wouldn't be bothered any longer.

It would be insane. Several franchises would fold. Everyone loses except the rich markets and the elite players. Even some of the elite players would lose if they ever got seriously injured. Both sides need the union and CBA to exist to increase their prosperity.
Edit: I should also say that the players need it more because the owners are already wealthy, where as the players obviously depend on the league to exist.

If this happened and teams started to fold that would be very bad for the players. Suddenly it would go from a scarcity of players to a surplus. Bottom tier players would get paid like dirt since they will be so easily replaced. This would be very bad for everyone.
