Truthfully neither did I... and Yzerman didn't name him directly... but noted in his post-draft presser how the 'kids' who played 'up' he would have preferred to be in A last year and this upcoming year (again unless they 'prove' they're ready and then DET won't hold them back). Perhaps Berg is 'ready' after last year's showing. But since he's waiver exempt it wouldn't shock me (at least to start the season).

I could be wrong but I can't see Berggren going down. He's beyond the AHL at this point and there are only 3 forwards with his blend of skill and IQ on the team. If anything he should get a promotion to the top 6 - especially after his WC showing. He will likely end up "stuck" on the the 3rd line (ready for a bigger role when called upon) and could create a nice secondary connection with Sprong (if he doesn't get to marinate with Raymond on the 2nd line from the get-go).
I would bet on Veleno, Fabbri, or Fischer sharing odd man out status in that lineup throughout the season.
Veleno needs more time developing in the AHL - he is too slow and too far behind the pace of play still. That said, if he has a strong offseason he could maintain his 4th line C role.
Fabbri will be in and out of the lineup due to injury and I wouldn't be surprised if he's shopped or waived at some point later this year in order to give the younger, more promising players their dues.
Fischer is TBD. He brings an element to the team that is badly needed and only seen in three other players (Perron, Rassmusen and Kostin) - sandpaper and hits.
FWIW - my ideal forward lineup for the Wings entering this season:
Debrincat-Larkin-Perron
Rassmusen-Compher-Raymond
Berggren-Copp-Sprong
Kostin-Veleno-Fabbri/Fischer
Definitely an improvement on last season's lineup - but Rassmusen and Compher aren't top 6 players. To be fair to them, however, that line is really more of a 2A/3A line sharing the load with the other 2B/3B line in Berggren-Copp-Sprong.
The lineup is still missing two true, long-term, do-it-all top 6 gamebreakers to accompany Larkin and Debrincat (and, hopefully one day, Raymond and Berggren... it looks like Stevie is buying time in order to give Kasper a chance to fill one of those holes).

What is the consensus on Jake Walman? Is he actually a top pairing dman or was the second half of last season an anomaly?

Seemingly only solid dman that plays really well with a stud
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.
What do you guys think of Veleno? He's sitting out on waivers or free agency in a couple multi-cat leagues that I'm in. In the deeper ones, he would've been reasonably useful last year on lighter schedule nights.
He would even be minor-eligible if he ends up in the AHL, but I won't count on that. I would be dropping nobody of note to get him.

Maybe not as exciting as some of the other signings but still fantasy relevant.

UPDATE: The #RedWings today re-signed forward Joe Veleno to a one-year contract with an AAV of $825,000.

Apparently not all the pre-Yzerman picks are being shoved out the door. Happy as I did snag him in a cap league, and he'll be fine at that cap hit.

Mannnn. I remember how excited I was that draft to pull of Zadina and Veleno. How times have changed.
Naw I think that was a bit overblown tbh. Rasmussen, Berggren were pre-Yzerman - and they seem to be fine. I think he also really wanted to keep Zadina but his hand got forced by the player. The bigger issue was how poorly the Wings drafted in those years imo vs him wanting to only have 'his' guys.

Not an anomaly.
He never really got hot.
Just steady as it goes every game. could book him for 2 shots, 2 blocks and a hit every game
Something has to give though, there's 8 NHL - Dmen. Seider the only ELC.
Cancel expectations of Edvinsson to start the year at least.
We're looking at a six of:
Walman - Seider
Chiarot - Petry
Gostisbehere - Holl
God, that's a leaky 5/6 though
with Maatta & McIsaac as likely scratches.
Edvinsson likely gest 1/2 a year (min) in Grand Rapids
Personally, I really like Rasmussen.
He's turning into a real solid 2-way F.
At 6'6" 221 he easily qualifies under 'big-man' theory. so his breakout is likely 2yrs away.
That said, he was over .5 pt/gm for the first time in his career last year. (sitting 238gp)
^was seeing a small breakout. and entering fantasy relevance
