I guess Ott won't be back with STL.
Not typically a L2 C but extremely versatile. Could be a 2B type center?

Is Petry a UFA after his one year deal?

True, to say "never has been" is a stretch. I am thinking more of the past decade or so when it came to issues signing FA's.

True. But the nikitin, Fayne, and especially the Pouliot deal proves that if wanted a guy and were willing to pay enough, we could get them. I just don't think Mac T wanted to do it.

Things are getting a little trickier as the team gets close to the cap though. The Petry signing does look good, and if Schultz signs for a reasonable price as well (not holding my breath) then the Oilers will have a little more wiggle room to do something.

I'd be happy with Ott. He doesn't have much offense, but he is a hard worker and good at faceoffs. Despite the lack of offense to be a true 2C, I think his work-ethic, leadership, and grit is exactly what the Oilers' top 6 needs.

I'd happily sign him to a 5 year deal, if that is what it would take. Guys like him can play in the bottom 6 later in their career and still be instrumental to helping a team mature to the next level.

    ok, let's summarize:

    - Legwand to Ottawa
    - Sobotka to the KHL
    - Ott to St. Louis
    - Berglund not likely being traded now

    who's left?

If Draisaitl isn't ready for the NHL, even as a 3C, we are in a lot of trouble here.

Arcobello, Lander, and Draisatl are the current options. I really think the Oilers are going to roll with those guys. I agree the team is in trouble again.

Derek Roy - No thanks. He's a really bad fit for this roster as far as I am concerned.
Mike Ribeiro - Total headcase - keep him far away.
Andrei Loktionov - We're really scraping the bottom of the barrel here now and they might as well just keep the plugs they have.

    One year of Saku Koivu.
Overpay him on a one year deal. He'll bring good leadership, stability, depth, etc...

Trade him at the deadline and get an extra pick if we're not in contention.

Oilers really need a guy who can keep up on the 2nd line though.

This year was finally a year to go out and get a solid #2 center in the FA market. Somehow the Oilers missed out on everyone!

But hey, we got Pouliot. Glad we addressed out 3rd line early instead of jumping the gun and grabbing a real need down the middle.

They needed that as well. The problem is the team had so many holes that they couldn't fill them all in one offseason. Total disaster.

You keep saying we missed out on someone by not "jumping the gun". Who was the free agent centre that you feel the oilers should have got?

Well considering they have yet to sign ANYONE to help with their #2C issue, anything would have been a help. Now, after watching FA's get signed elsewhere the options are pretty limited and the hands have been forced.

Its going to be another frustrating year.
