I wonder what Vegas' asking price was to hold off on Methot? Sucks that we won't see the trades until tomorrow. I will be surprised if Methot is in Vegas very long. While I shouldn't be, it's hard to muster up any positive feelings whenever I think about Phaneuf right now...

They were saying on TSN 1200 this morning that Vegas wanted Ottawa's first round pick in 2018, and Ottawa turned that down.

If I was a Sens fan I'd be more upset about protecting Ceci over Methot.

If Dion waived, they could have protected them all. Surely they could have given Vegas something to not pick Phaneuf.

A first round pick in 2018 for Methot. That is really tough to swallow.

I find it amazing in the degree to which some teams got killed and others lost virtually nothing.

I'm fine with exactly what happened. From Dion not waving, to who the Sens protected and left exposed, to not giving up extra assets just to save a player, to who Vegas took.

Come on. That is just silly in my opinion. With the roster the way it was, Methot had to be made available.

While I'm mostly a defender of Sens fans on this board I can't see how you could be fine with exactly how things happened. I think losing Methot is a huge blow for this team.

Losing Ryan would have been an easier loss to absorb, IMO. Especially given the type of game this team plays under Boucher.

I am fine with who they protected too. Losing Methot blows, especially since he's a hometown guy, but I for one will be furious if people boo Phaneuf. Phaneuf earned that contract and Ottawa traded for that contract. We should embrace the fact that Dion wants to stay in Ottawa. He's still a great defenceman. Every team has a few overpaid players, that's the way it goes. I think they'll be able to fill this hole and do well going forward. I for one am excited to see what Claesson can do next year.

It's been a long time since I posted, so I just want to say how heartwarming it is to peruse the boards and see all the people supporting dobber. This is still a great community. I hope he is proud of what he has built here.

Methot. Every Canadian team is on his no-trade-list...with the exception of Ottawa.

I am fine with it because it happens. As Dorion said, look what the other 3 teams in the Conference finals had to give up. Good teams lost good players.

Crazy homer Sens fan thought. I wonder if one of 2 things might happen:
1. With 5m of cap space freed up, a hole to fill on D and the coffers full from a long playoff run, I wonder if the Sens take a run at a FA d-man a la Shattenkirk?
2. The Sens trade for Methot post Jan 1 at a considerably lower price than the first rounder.

I can't see scenario one being ideal with Karlsson AND Shattenkirk being RHD and similar types of players. Ceci and Phaneuf also have enough offensive upside to complement Karlsson (also Claeson/ Wideman too). So scenario 1 looks more like fill the gap with another stay at home guy-- perhaps fill internally via Claeson or Harpur?

with Chabot coming, and having lost Methot, not sure Shattenkirk is on their radar... not sure Ott is on his radar anyway, Expect him to sign in the NY/Penn area.

I would think Alzner becomes an option as he's more a methot style Dman

I can't see scenario two either - i'm sure they tried to work a deal out prior to the expansion draft and I can't see why Vegas would take a deal like that after Jan 1 when they could have gotten picks + Bobby Ryan for example if Ottawa was willing to come to the table with a quality offer.

Call me crazy, but I don't see a hole to fill on D. Why do people pretend like Methot stepped on the ice every time Karlsson did? The reality is that Methot is and was a very good 4th or 5th Dman that was paid like a 2nd or 3rd. Karlsson, Phaneuf and Ceci played more minutes and harder minutes this season.

The Sens will be better than fine and I am happy they didn't lose as much as the other 3 teams that made the Conference finals; and waaaay less than other teams that decided they needed to pay Vegas not to take a certain player.
