Some talk on Sens Radio (1200AM) about whether Ottawa would go the 4 + 4 route (EK, MM, CC, DP and Turris, Hoffman, Stone and Pageau). That would mean Brassard is exposed, which seems like it would create a bigger whole than losing Ceci. Take it for what it is, sports radio talk.

Protecting Methot over Ceci is incredibly shortsighted. But weakening yourself up the middle (in order to protect Methot) would be even worse.

Age, upside, cap hit. How many criteria to you need?
Few (myself included) would say that Ceci is better than Methot now... but the gap between them is not nearly wide enough to even consider keeping MM over CC.

Ottawa won't be better this year or next year by keeping a guy who is younger, or who has more potential down the road. Keep the guy that gels with Karlsson. Plus, they can probably get just as much in a trade for Ceci as they can for Methot. Ceci is easier to replace, screw upside. I don't care about 5 years from now.

This is a point that is so underestimated.

A lot of people treat players like they're just names on a page that can be moved anywhere and perform at the same capacity. If Methot insulates my franchise player and allows him to play at an elite level then upside be damned.

Rumour has it that the Sens will protect Ceci and leave Methot exposed. Apparently Ceci has been told he will be protected.

Maybe they are thinking of protecting 8 skaters and 1 goalie instead of the 7-3-1 that most thought.

UPDATE: John Shannon says the Sens list is indeed 7-3-1.

Yeah, if they went with 8-1 and protected four D, they'd probably be losing Brassard.

I don't think there is a side deal. Freddy Claesson is also a consideration. Younger, cheaper, and someone to grow with.

Methot seems more valuable as a trade chip. (And I think he could return more).

I wonder what Vegas' asking price was to hold off on Methot? Sucks that we won't see the trades until tomorrow. I will be surprised if Methot is in Vegas very long. While I shouldn't be, it's hard to muster up any positive feelings whenever I think about Phaneuf right now...

If I was a Sens fan I'd be more upset about protecting Ceci over Methot.
