If I negotiate a NMC and then waive it to be a "team player" then I want something extremely valuable in return.

Legally, if you ask the other party to waive a contractual right, you expect to have to offer some additional consideration to that party. A NMC already has that built-in, that is, you give the player the choice of destination.. No Ottawa was one of the teams he could be traded to without waiving. If he had to waive he wouldn't have an NmC right now

Regardless, he'd give LV a really solid - better than thought option on the blue line. And Ott would be free and clear $7m cap hit for 5 more seasons.

No they want to unprotect him to not lose methot or ceci. They don't want vegas to take phaneuf.

Ottawa doesn't give a crap out Phaneuf's cap hit. They aren't a cap team. They care about the actual dollars and cents. And they wouldn't have made the trade for him if they weren't comfortable with the dollars.

Phaneuf has played well in his role here. It's true - they want him to waive to protect Ceci and Methot. They don't want LAV to take Phaneuf - that would just leave a hole they'd have to plug.
