What a mess my draft was... (Marlo's Crew). My lovely baby demanded attention and mom was busy, I turned my back and then all the goalies are gone!!!!!! I knew I should have drafted one in the 2nd round, but I thought that with the top Tier 1 goalies gone it wouldn't matter - WRONG!
Then I had to leave the computer and came back to see that I had left Burrows on top of my queue. A bit too soon for him to go....

Oh well, children come first I guess, but let me tell you, I can't wait until something matters to him. Like when he brings his 1st girl over in 16 years? I'm going to cry the whole time and refuse to go to bed. That will teach him!

To all you single men, just enjoy winning pools now, 1st you get married and it becomes a challenge, then you have a kid and it become impossible. If you're really serious about fantasy hockey you will either stay single or do like Dobber and make it your living.

[First Round Pick]

I hear you there! My fun was trying to keep wireless service while driving back to Calgary through Drumheller (valleys are not conducive to keeping connected). Keith was autopicked for me, I had planned on taking another goalie but it seems they were gone by that pick anyway. Also explains how I ended up with Streit too!!!!

All in all, that was a ton of fun. Should be a very interesting season, good luck to all from an Avs fan in Calgary!

Last Resort

After getting the 4th overall pick, I saw pretty much 3 options to choose from: pick LW (Parise ranked highest in my list), G (Luongo or Brodeur) or Green. 4th overall also meant getting late pick in the 2nd round, 29 and that could cause problems in G department. I wanted one of Halak, Rinne or Howard and based on the previous Expert, Pro and Entry league drafts estimated that none of them would be available at 29, maybe Halak if I am lucky. So I tried to swap 1st and 2nd round picks with Marlo's Crew (11th overall), but that didn't work out.

Last year I ended up 2nd in the Smythe after drafting G's with my first 2 picks (actually picked Brodeur over Crosby at 3th overall last year) and that lead to my team being a bit behind in offensive categories. So decided to go with Parise at 4 and pick goalies at rounds 2, 3. I was originally planning to pick my 2nd goalie in round 4, but changed my mind after seeing Entry League – Patrick's results, especially the goalie run from mid 2nd round to mid 3rd round.

1. (4) Zach Parise (NJ - LW)
Went with best available LW on my list. Considered Green too, but felt that picking LW now and D in 5th / 6th round would be better than picking Green now and LW in round 5 or 6.

2. (29) Jaroslav Halak (StL - G)
Fantastic, Halak dropped to me. Kinda happy now that trade didn't went through now that I got goalie I wanted in the 2nd round.

3. (36) Jonas Hiller (Anh - G)
Should provide good categorical combination with Halak. Halak should give me above average win totals, low GAA and average SV totals, Hiller average wins, below average GAA and high SV totals. Considered Turco as well, but didn't want to spend insurance pick on Crawford somewhere around round 15.

4. (61) Marian Hossa (Chi - RW)
Actually was hoping Chara would drop to me, but he went 7 picks before so had to take my 2nd option, Hossa. Actually had Lidstrom ranked higher tahn Hossa in my rankings, but felt that Lidstrom was more likely be available at my next pick.

5. (68) Nicklas Lidstrom (Det - D)
Went as planned. Draft going pretty well so far.

6. (93) Andrei Markov (Mon - D)
I was originally planning to pick 2 C at rounds 6 and 7, preferably Zajac and M.Koivu or maybe Kesler if he drops this far. Didn't think Markov would available and I felt I had to take him, since he was clearly the highest ranked player left on my list.

Going with original plan by picking Zajac.

Originally planned to pick 4 RW's in rounds 8-11, but since I had picked Hossa earlier, I changed plans to pick 1 LW somewhere here. I wanted Morrow or clowe here, but both went just few picks before me so had to revert back to original plan and pick Doan.

9. (132) Jason Pominville (Buf - RW)
At this point LW's top of my list were Perron, Kunitz and Avery and I was confident I could get them in round 13, maybe in 14 and 15. So Pominville it is. Also had Selanne ranked higher in my list, but was quite sure he would last to next round so I let him slide.

Nice, all going pretty much according to the plan.

11. (164) Kimmo Timonen (Phi - D)
Wanted 2 D in rounds 11-12 and original targets were I.White, Kronwall, Pitkanen and Robidas. White went, but Timonen was still available and slightly higher on my list so went with him.

Kronwall and Robidas went, so took Pitkanen.

Checked my team so far and saw quite big deficit in PIM so went with Avery who was still available as I thought few rounds earlier.

I had only 1 C and 2 LW so hoped to get Steen or Malone here or if that failed, go with the original plan with J.Boychuk or Tyutin. Only Tyutin left by the time I of my pick so I go with him.

LW or C. Wanted Ladd, but he went before my pick so picked best C available.

Same as above.

20. (317) Marc Savard (Bos - C)
Surprised that he fell that far. Yes he is a risk, but draft was nearly at the point of picking bench players. Could pay off huge, especially with my poor C's.

21. (324) Joffrey Lupul (Anh - LW)
He's injured, but he was clearly the highest rated LW on my board and I was confident I could pick decent LW to replace him for the meantime with my next pick.

22. (349) Niklas Hagman (Cgy - LW)
4th LW to replace Lupul while he's injured.

23. (356) Jordan Leopold (Buf - D)
Best D available to fill the last D position.

24. (381) Brandon Sutter (Car - C)
Still had to fill the 4th C spot since Savard probably starts in the IR. Wanted Stoll, Umberger or Anisimov, but all went before my pick so took Sutter. Not thrilled with this selection, but it's 24th round after all.

25. (388) Cory Stillman (Fla - LW)
Bench LW. Injury prone, but still manages to put up decent point totals when playing.

Overall I am quite pleased with my team. I managed to get lot of the players I was targetting. I like my situation at G, D and RW. LW could be a bit better, but it's still decent. Doan might get LW eligibility based on past seasons and that would balance my wings nicely, but we'll see about that.
C is quite rubbish after Zajac, but that that is pretty much as expected due to my draft strategy.

I am not going to do a break down now because we are just about to get it underway, should have done it sooner. I am pretty happy with my team though. Definetely was a fun draft, I am pretty new at this and it was nice to draft with guys who know player depth. Lost some of my picks and got some.
