OMG, I just type out half of my draft breakdown (45 minutes worth) and the cleaning guy at my office hit the power bar with his frigging mop and erased everything!!! I'll start over but there's no way I remember what I had already typed!!!!

    Read's Raiders

Okay, so I had a very clear strategy coming into this pool. Try to keep my wife from not leaving me by promising that this is the last draft and also to keep the swearing volume low so not to wake my young children. Definitely kept the volume low, we'll have to wait an see about the other one.

    1. (14) Dany Heatley (SJ - LW,RW) - Being pick 14 of 15, I wanted to make sure I got a solid G and LW early and play the rest by ear. When it got to me and I saw Heater with his dual eligibility, it was an easy choice to take him before a G.

    2. (17) Henrik Lundqvist (NYR - G) - Everyone thinks they know what they are going to do coming into a draft. That is until you see the Yahoo clock ticking down in your face, forcing you into a mad panic about who to grab. Especially when you know your next pick is miles away. I grab Lundy here and immediately regret it. After losing a lot of sleep and seeing where he went in the other pools, I am actually quite happy with the pick in the end.

    3. (44) Steve Mason (Cls - G) - I figured goalies would go fast but I never thought they'd go this fast!! I need a G2 and I have to pick from Niemi, Backstrom, Vokoun and Bernier....so I go Mason. Should provide Good Svs and is a lock as the starter, barring injury. I liked Niemi but Niitty went just before him so it was a risk to have only one of them. Maybe should have gone Vokoun but that's life, move on.

    4. (47) Bobby Ryan (Anh - LW) - Excited to see Ryan available at this pick, pass on the likes of Marleau and Carter but love his multi cat potential and think he'll have a great year (hopefully on the top line)

    5. (74) Erik Johnson (StL - D) - A bit of a D run starts, Chara, Phaneuf, Lidstrom all go right before me but I am happy to grab EJ for his Pts, PIM potential and maybe even +/-, who knows.

    6. (77) Johan Franzen (Det - RW) - Hmmm.....How injured is he??? I figured, even at 65-70 games, this guy gives me something in every cat, happy.

    7. (104) P.K. Subban (Mon - D) - Straight up Homer pick here, I know he's in some other queues whether guys admit it or not at this point. Mocking ensues but I realize it's coming from a Bruins fan, so I dismiss it as jealousy

    8. (107) Ales Hemsky (Edm - RW) - So now what? I have no C's and 1 RW at this point and have a couple options here. Plekanec is queued up with Yandle and Ennis and I figure I can get Ennis with my next pick so I grab Hemsky as he could be a steal this late in the draft.

    9. (134) Alexander Edler (Van - D) - Dead Wrong about Ennis, he goes early in the round and leaves me scrambling without a Center yet. My solution, take another D man I go for the +/- and points combo with Edler, a lot of hype this year, hopefully he lives up to it.

    10. (137) Kris Versteeg (Tor - LW) - At this point, I've decided to just go with my gut the rest of the way. Versteeg, Havlat, Giroux, Voracek in the queue. I go with Vertseeg to fill out my LW position, I'll get one of those other guys with my next pick.....Nope, all gone in the next 7 picks!!

    11. (164) Mike Ribeiro (Dal - C) - Alright, round 11 and no Centers!!! I know it's a deep position but cmon man, pick one already. Ribeiro fits the bill nicely here and starts a personal run of centers that had me scrambling through Dobber's guide for the best value left. Just a note that I've had Brian Boucher queued up for about 2 rounds now and keep waiting and waiting.....

    12. (167) Antoine Vermette (Cls - C) - Pickings are getting a little slim and I'm tiring from the stress of the Yahoo countdown, so I start going off the board a bit. I pick Vermette here for absolutely no good reason other than I needed a C.

    13. (194) Sam Gagner (Edm - C) - Hoping for a big year out of Gagner, Ive grabbed him late in a couple other pools and maybe reached a bit here but I like him.

    14. (197) Ville Leino (Phi - LW) - Enough with the centers now, 3 in 3 picks is too much to stomach. Evander Kane is next in the queue and gets nabbed right in front of me and now the clock is ticking and I grab Leino for his playoff performance and hope he doesn't fade away in the Philly org chart.

    15. (224) Michael Frolik (Fla - RW) - Not a bad pickup here, imo. Not the best for +/- but I like his potential and J Staal and Filatov leave my queue looking pretty bare.

    16. (227) Matt Carle (Phi - D) - Dobber picked him in his pool so he must be worth something)

    17. (254) Jamie Benn (Dal - LW) - Hoping Benn could put up decent numbers this year, not upset at all about grabbing him in the 17th round. Boucher finally goes and now I have to start thinking about a 3rd G.

    18. (257) Dan Hamhuis (Van - D) - +/-, PIM pick, bonus if he gives me anything else.

    19. (284) Corey Crawford (Chi - G) - If Turco stinks it up, the Hawks never hesitate to give someone else the reins. Sort of wanted to grab Roloson here but figured it was equal risk.

    20. (287) Jarret Stoll (LA - C) - Like his overall contributions and needed another C.

    21. (314) Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Pho - D) - I don't even know if he makes the team but it sounds like it.

    22. (317) Michael Grabner (Fla - RW) - ??? Clock pressure, I'll check the WW to see what's left. Otherwise, hope for injuries in FLA (Holy Crap, 2 Panthers!!!)

    23. (344) Martin Hanzal (Pho - C) - Dark Horse to have a productive season, I'd take 50 pts, 90 PIM as a steal.

    24. (347) Chris Butler (Buf - D) - I don't know, look what's left

    25. (374) Nikolai Kulemin (Tor - LW) - I was very happy to see Kulemin's name left on the board for my last pick. I had him in the queue for a couple rounds and is a great replacement LW should anything happen to my starters.

Overall, pretty happy with my draft. Felt the pressure a few times and if you had told me I would end up with 2 Oilers, 2 Leafs and 2 Panthers, I probably would have laughed in your face but that's the way it goes down. We'll see how the season plays out, with injuries, slumps and surprises, you can never really tell how your team will stack up.

Let's Get The Season Started Already!!!

I also had a clear strategy going in at what I thought was 4th overall (I was one of the late adds), and I had hockey at 7pm last night so I was freaking out on the way home when I was getting emails saying that the order was wrong. I gave a friend of mine my plan for the first few rounds in case I missed it, but I ended up going 10th overall! Thank god I made it home for 8:45

    1. (10) Ryan Miller

I wanted a goalie first round no matter what and Luongo was the only one that went before I had my pick so Miller it was. Weak division + no legitimate threat to steal games =

    2. (21) Pekka Rinne

When I thought I had 4th pick, I definitely wanted two goalies first. Finding out I had this pick made that decision a lot harder. But seeing that most guys had taken two players with their first two picks, I knew I had to. Goalies that went between my 2nd and 3rd pick were Howard, Rask, Fleury, Hiller, Kipper, Halak, Ward, Quick, Turco, Anderson, Price...WOW.

    3. (40) Pavel Dastyuk

Couldn't believe he was still around at 40!! As a Wings' fan, it made taking two goalies first and second all the more worthwhile. He is good for every category and the Wings should be among the offensive elite.

    4. (51) Patrick Marleau

Ryan and Semin got taken right before me here. Wasn't too pleased but I don't see why Marleau can't get 80 again. Will be playing him at LW allll season long. Would have taken Kopitar, but wanted a high ranked winger.

    5. (70) Phil Kessel

Looks pretty damn good in preseason and I know he will take a ton of shots. Again, Spezza was available here..which really pained me to do. Kessel is streaky, but this isn't H2H so as long as he gets 35-40 goals I will be happy.

    6. (81) Shea Weber

Had Pronger in my sights but he was nabbed two picks before me. Felt like I had to get a top tiered D, or close to it. Hoping his totals go back up this year.

    7. (100) Travis Zajac

Could be huggggge for my assists this year if that line sticks together. A lot of wingers were going at this point, but I stuck with my way of picking the best player available (IMO).

    8. (111) Brian Rafalski

Im hoping I didn't do this because of his 4 point night the other night. It was him or Yandle; which ironically was the same decision I had to make in my keeper draft in round 1 this year. I went with Yandle there, but I expect big things from Detroit's three lines of offense this year.

    9. (130) Brad Boyes

The Blues better breakout this year; I was sure of it last year when almost everyone on their team regressed. Will definitely have talented linemates and is good for 200 plus shots. Started to realize I have a lot of shooters....

    10. (141) David Booth

Took a risk here because of his injury last season, but if healthy will be a huge steal IMO. 30 goals and 200+ shots is realistic. Could end up regreting it though with guys like Hudler, Voracek, Giroux still on the table.

    11. (160) Matt Duchene

I had to keep checking my list to make sure this guy wasn't taken before here. I couldn't believe it so I had to do a search to make sure he wasn't hurt or anything. There's the justification for this pick taking so long. And at this point, I had two of every position so I thought it was ok to dip back into the centres.

    12. (171) Dustin Brown

LA should compete for the division this year so I had to jump on Brown; I just wanted to feel apart of it.

    13. (190) Ray Whitney

Will definitely help their powerplay and could be on a line with Doan or Wolski. LWs were pretty thin at this point and it was either taking a riskier pick like Kane or Leino, or going with 50 guaranteed points. I did the latter.

    14. (201) Tom Gilbert

Big things from him this year. I can feel it. I know he was ranked pretty low, but I didn't want to take any risk leaving him around. Ryan Whitney was taken right after him, so I can only imagine he would have went next had I not done it. Should be the top D on their PP and I got him at a time when second and third D were going.

    15. (220) Tyler Bozak

I can't believe I drafted Kessel AND Bozak. Im hoping for 60 with Bozak, but who knows what happens in Toronto. The top line today is on the third or fourth in November.

    16. (231) Sheldon Souray

Hoping and praying he ends up somewhere because I really needed some PIM at this point. Now I really have a lot of shooters though. Wasn't too many good options on D available at this point, although Wisniewski went like two picks after.

    17. (250) Vaclav Prospal

At this point I had my 2 G, and then 4C, 3LW, 3RW, 4D. I immediately regreted this pick. Not because of his up-down-up tendencies, just because I know Frolov will get a longgggg look with Gaborik; Prospal will probably be lost in the mix. Again, not much available in terms of wingers...but I am still sour.

    18. (261) Matt Carkner

Hoping to not finish last in PIM at this point, so I picked Carkner. Hopefully fights don't continue to decrease.

    19. (280) Derrick Brassard

I really wanted Brassard and I ended up taking him before I had 4 RWs or even 6 D....but I won't care if he finally breaks out this season. I know Vermette will start with Nash, but hopefully Filatov-Brassard-Voracek sticks as line two.

    20. (291) Dan Cleary

Surprisingly only my third Wing player. Playing with Hudler and Modano should definitely help his numbers, and the Wings are never afraid to switch around their wingers, so he should see time with Filppula's line and Pav/Hank. Not bad for a 4th RW.

    21. (310) Corey Schneider

Knew I wanted a third goalie at some point and I know the Canucks will probably play Luongo a bit less this year. The 8-2 loss the other night worried me but he played better last night.

    22. (321) Kris Russell

Yahoo tells me he might make their first game after originally being expected to miss a month. But I now have 2 Leafs, 2 Jackets, an Oiler and a Panther.

    23. (340) Niklas Hagman

Hagman coming off my bench is perfect because he is so streaky! I really don't like Calgary, but now I hope he gets 25 again.

    24. (351) Chris Neil

More PIM and my bench RW. Not really happy I took two PIM guys from one team (Neil and Carkner), but oh well.

    25. (370) Matt Niskanen

Could be a huge steal in my opinion. Only competition for him is Robidas and Dallas' top PP unit should be pretty lethal.

Only time will tell I guess. But yeah I couldn't believe Datsyuk; watching him and Zetterberg together in preseason has been pretty impressive.

west coast tsunami -- draft post mortem

As you've heard the draft order was re-randomized at the last minute in this draft. Some of us were scrambling a little bit, but I think that added to the drafting skill level. Thinking on our feet. Thanks to Dobber for sorting things out in a calm way.

While I have been involved in many hockey pools (one since 1983!!) this is the first rotisserie pool I've done so I was nervous about the strategy. My fear was getting caught short at one position and one scoring category. Turns out I think I did.

    1. (4) Evgeni Malkin (Pit - C)

I was switched from 15th to 4th--which sounds like a gift but, given my prep, threw me for a loop. One of the big three was a no brainer though now I was hoping there wasn't a big run on goalies b/c my next pick was way off.

    2. (27) Jonas Hiller (Anh - G)

So there was a big run on goalies. Scrambled to get two solid ones.

    3. (34) Marty Turco (Chi - G)

Wondering if Vokoun or Varlamov would have been better but I'll stand by these two.

    4. (57) Patrick Sharp (Chi - C,LW)

Looking back, this might have been early for him but wanted his dual status and his consistency across several categories.

    5. (64) Anze Kopitar (LA - C)

Big upside--couldn't pass. Was a plus player last year too. Better this year?

    6. (87) Brooks Laich (Was - LW)

Like Sharp a multi-category guy I wanted badly.

    7. (94) Alexander Frolov (NYR - LW)

I know I know it's just preseason but there seems to be chemistry w/ Gabby. Other choice was Gagner who was picked up soon after.

    8. (117) Andrei Markov (Mon - D)

D's getting thin so wanted a sure PP and assist guy. Injury risk but my first one like that.

    9. (124) Mikael Samuelsson (Van - RW)

Solid with upside. Again thinking PP. I am a Canucks fan and was getting shut out of town!

    10. (147) Claude Giroux (Phi - RW)

I like this player. Big skill set that is yet fully realized. Figure the last two picks will help +/- category.

    11. (154) Niklas Kronwall (Det - D)

Sense a changing of the guard in Det and thought this guy will be the winner.

    12. (177) Rene Bourque (Cgy - RW)

Multicategory guy. At this point I was feeling good about the balance of the team across positions. Was relaxing a bit and looking for the best players vs worrying about positions.

    13. (184) Brent Seabrook (Chi - D)

A bit of a risk b/c not sure how he is going to be used in Chi. Hoping for at least a nice +/- boost.

    14. (207) Kimmo Timonen (Phi - D)

Consistent stud. I remember worrying at this point that I was being too safe. I think overall I was.

    15. (214) Alex Tanguay (Cgy - LW)

Guessing a good year for pts and ppp.

    16. (237) Tom Poti (Was - D)

+/- and not bad PIM which I was sorely lacking.

    17. (244) Dave Bolland (Chi - C)

Possible big year given the extra ice-time in Chi. A steal at 244?

    18. (267) Marc-Edouard Vlasic (SJ - D)

With Blake gone thinking he's going to step up some.

    19. (274) Eric Fehr (Was - RW)

A bit of risk because not really top 6 forward. One injury though (and yes, I am talking to you Semin!) and he's floating on air.

    20. (297) T.J. Galiardi (Col - LW)

Question mark. I knew I had an extra LW and thought I could shift this guy to BN and wait to see where he ends up in the Col scheme. Again, possible high powered line mates.

    21. (304) Shawn Horcoff (Edm - C)

Dobber took him for his bench. Good enough for me.

    22. (327) Tuomo Ruutu (Car - LW)

Seems sure in top three in Car no?

    23. (334) Justin Williams (LA - RW)

Injury prone but hoping for a miracle.

    24. (357) Scott Clemmensen (Fla - G)

Slim pickings at this point. Experienced and Vokoun is not young.

    25. (364) Zbynek Michalek (Pit - D)

Not sure about his role in Pit but thinking a few categories would be covered.

So, in retrospect, a little tentative and safe. Wished I had a top tier goalie. Weak in PIM. Had fun doing it.

    Sacdechips - draft review:

    Goalies
    1. (7) Roberto Luongo (Van - G)
    3. (37) Carey Price (Mon - G)
    13. (187) Pascal Leclaire (Ott - G)
    16. (234) Jean-Sebastien Giguere (Tor - G)

I am happy with my goalies. With weekly line-ups, I only wanted #1 goalies. I got Leclaire and Giguere for really cheap. They will help a lot in the stat SV and I'll panic a bit less if a G gets injured.

    Core of forwards
    2. (24) Rick Nash (Cls - LW,RW)
    4. (54) Marian Gaborik (NYR - RW)
    6. (84) Brad Richards (Dal - C)
    7. (97) Daniel Alfredsson (Ott - RW)
    8. (114) Ryan Smyth (LA - LW)
    10. (144) Jiri Hudler (Det - RW)

I like Brad Richards #84, considering he was 2nd in PPP, 4th in Assists and 10th in SOG last year.

    5. (67) Zdeno Chara (Bos - D)
    9. (127) Lubomir Visnovsky (Anh - D)
    12. (174) Stephane Robidas (Dal - D)
    15. (217) Kurtis Foster (Edm - D)
    18. (264) John-Michael Liles (Col - D)
    23. (337) Francois Beauchemin (Tor - D)

Overall, I am very strong in PTS, PPP and SOG, but weak in PIM and +/-. I am satisfied with my draft and look forward to testing my team in the first few weeks of the pool.

Hey, so I'm not going to do a full analysis as I don't remember my thought process, but I'll give an outline of my positions.

    Luongod:

    C: Stamkos(1), Weiss(14), Fisher(15), Connolly(16)

I was autodrafted Stamkos as I arrived just as the draft was starting and my internet froze. I then figured wingers were more important than centers so I waited on picking C. I think these 4 are fine though.

    LW: Cammalleri(5), Vanek(7), Penner(10), Comrie(20)

I find goals are more important than assists and both Cammy and Vanek should provide lots of goals.

    RW: Kane(3), Semin(4), Briere(8), Vrbata(18)

I drafted RW early as both Kane and Semin were both steals at their draft spots.

    D: McCabe(11), Enstrom(13), Wideman(17), Corvo(19), Barker(21), Meszaros(22)

I waited a long time to draft a dman and figured I could grab some average guys instead of going for the stars. I don't know what to think about my d and how it will affect my team.

    G: Bryzgalov(2), Lehtonen(6)

My goaltending is decent, hopefully Bryz has another great year and if/when Lehtonen gets injured or doesn't perform, I have C.Mason and DiPietro who should fill in fine.

    Bn: C.Mason(9), DiPietro(12), Turris(23), Hodgson(24), Mathieu Carle(25)

I autodrafted the last 3 rounds as I was using my roommate's laptop, so I will likely drop Carle and one of Hodgson or Turris.

Overall I like my team. I have some elite wingers as with some decent depth guys. My centers are also solid despite waiting rounds to draft them. My d-men are very average but hopefully their peripheral stats are alright. My goaltending should compete, maybe not in wins but in the other stats.

    What do you think?

I do not think Kane was a steal. My team (sacdechips) will kick your ass Luongod!

Also, it would have been nice to see people use their Dobber id for their teams so it's easier to track them on the forum.
