Atlanta is the first of two back-to-back games. Islanders tomorrow.
Could be one reason...
According to dailyfaceoff, Varlamov is starting because he was off the ice first at the morning skate. If this is true, I'm happy about it, being a Varlamov owner, but I'm still confused. I mean Theo had a great night against Philly, why put him on the bench.
Is he still hurting from the injury he suffered a few weeks ago? There has to be more to this. I'm not dying to know, but I'm just curious if anyone has any insights into this.

Also, I seem to remember seeing something saying Varlamov has done well against Atlanta in previous games.

Yea back-to-back would explain it... Here's hoping he does well!

well i think boudreau will continue to try to get varlamov starts as the season goes along. it doesn't do the caps any good to ride only theodore this year.
they've got a better shot in the playoffs if both goalies are fresh... and they need theodores money to come off the books to re-sign backstrom/semin this offseason.
I'd imagine a 60-40 split for most of the year if both goalies continue to preform at a capable level (and win games). Anyways... this is the best thing for a young goalie's progression (same thing boston is doing with rask this year).
So i'd expect to see a lot of "unexplainable" varlamov starts throughout the year.
