Holy crap did not see this coming.I was hoping if they did not sign that they would trade him and get something out of him. So if he does not sign in Detroit who would Detroit look at to sign to replace him?

Datsyuk did this a few years ago, before signing that two-year 3.4/per year (or whatever it was) contract.

Sentium, you're up on all things REDWINGS. Give me some insight on this. Why is a player of Hudler's capability perpetually mired on the 3rd line and given less than 14 minutes of ice per game? To teach him responsible hockey? Because there's a logjam in DETs top 6? Why in heaven's name are they dicking around with him slowly when he's paid his dues and the team has finally cleared a top 6 role for him? Are they trying to sign him for less than 3m? The only really good news in all this would be for V. Leino owners.

    Anyone have insight on this?

I have since traded Hudler in a huge deal (team in signature) so I don't really care. I just thought it was funny:
I traded away Roy, Hudler, Sykora and Ribeiro. In return I got Spezza, Zetterberg, Huselius and Kariya.

I still have Radulov and will keep him until he gets me 120 points as promised by every Radulov fan on this site. Once he gets 120 points, I will sell high.

The only player in Detroit that is more skilled is Pavel Datsyuk. That's point one. Hudler's passing is often sublime and he has that Brett Hull skill of sneakily getting into the open areas to get good scoring chances. He's also surprisingly good along the boards.

Why he doesn't get more icetime? There are several reasons and I'll try to touch on all of them.

    1. He's at best adequate defensively. To play in the top six for Mike Babcock you have to be good defensively. The only player this description doesn't fit is Tomas Holmström but that was because he had the team's best two defensive players on his line and they all had amazing chemistry (Monty Babcock's Flying Circus - Dats, Z and Homer).

    2. He's only an average skater. When he broke into the NHL he was a flat out bad skater, but he's worked on it and now he buzzes around pretty good. With that said, it's still a hindrance to him, because he can't make up for it with size. If he got an extra gear, he'd be even better and thankfully that's something that can be worked on.

    3. The top six has been jam packed with good players - until now. This was/is supposed to be the year when we find out if he can consistently play in the top six. Before when he's played there it's been mixed results. Sometimes he's had great success and at other times he's deferred more to Zetterberg and Franzen and not really played his game. Him together with those two made up the forward spots on Detroit's best PP unit this past season, with Kronwall and Samuelsson on the points.

    4. He's small and gets knocked off the puck pretty easily. He needs guys to come into the zone with him, or the opposing players will simply drive him out to the boards and pin him there because he can't force himself past them.

    5. Mike Babcock loves having balanced lines to spread out the scoring. There aren't many players that produce more with such little icetime and Huds mostly makes a bland third or fourth line into a legit scoring threat. That's a kind of versatility that shouldn't be undervalued.

    6. We're impatient. Most players that aren't Ovechkin or Crosby have a pretty long evolution period and work themselves up in the hierarchy. Hudler has done that and there is nothing that points to him plateauing as a 3rd line PP specialist. He's still developing and we fantasy junkies need to realize that players take their time to realize their potential

I think that's most of the important points.

Notch, I think you did well, HA. Man is that crap luck. Hopefully Hudler will stay and you probably still win the trade.

Sharks are terrible, always have and always will be. Regular season success means squat.
Losing Hudler would be a tough thing to accept but so would ahving to pay him 4 plus million if thats what he is awarded. Detroit has been so successful for soooooooooooooo long for the very reason that they dont allow one player, espescially a Hudler, to think he is better than the team. If he leaves I will be disapointed. But by no means will the wings suck and I would still bet the farm they win the West and possibly the presidents trophy as well.

Now it seems like it's a one-year $2 million deal, and he's still negotiating with the Wings.

Edit: Also, remember that the $2 million figure is virtually tax free. It compares to somewhere between 3 and 4 million in the NHL.

Thanks again for your insight. This comment here helps me some b/c I was about to ask a silly question. Holland was quoted in an article on mlive.com that Hudler walking was a very real possibility b/c he would have to accept less money to play in the NHL. TSN has his contract offer at 2m and I was wondering what kind of a low-balling game Hudler was getting exposed to in DET. If Samuelsson is worth 2.5 Hudler should certainly be worth 3.5. What you're saying is 3.5 taxable is comparable to 2 tax free.

Good to know! Thanks again for your valuable input.

    Cheers.

Also remember that the KHL has had trouble getting money to players. They're a sketchy league at best.

Not a team like Dynamo Moscow. They're legit. However, there are a handful of teams with shady owners, just like in the NHL. The NHL has been paying for several teams' expenditures at times, most recently Phoenix. But if there is one team there's not any financial doubt about, it's Dynamo.

That's a good point. I don't know the specifics of the Russian teams themselves, but I know a lot of players were either asked/forced to take pay cuts or did not receive some payments. I'll take your word for it though.

Still, I don't see him actually leaving.

Yeah, me neither. I think this will just speed up the signing process with the Wings.

I remember either Lada Togliatti or Severstal Cherepovets that held back pay a year or two ago for former Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko and some other players. Wouldn't be surprised if there were other teams that did this. I haven't read anything like that about the bigger KHL/RSL teams though.

It doesn't seem like Hudler was using this as a negotiating tactic. A Kukla's Korner translation of his press conference for Dynamo:

In Detroit there is wasn’t place for me and I didn’t want to go to another club. So i didn’t ask for a trade. Then came Dynamo with their offer.

I started thinking about it and decided to go to Russia. It was tough but this is not a question of life or death. It is only hockey.

The KHL is good league. I should be one of the key players so it could help me in my career. I don’t think I will close the door to NHL. I am young and there are still 13 years until the end of my career. I want my career to be more colorful.
