I felt it was a slight overpay for Lindholm but you do it to get him early + take him away from other teams like Winnipeg

Now the Lindholm deal looks just right lol

Monahan's VERY small cap number made him a valuable asset across the board. Every team in the league can afford that deal. And his versatility made the bidding war happen.

A guy like Lindholm had a smaller market. It's funny because the Lindholm trade is pretty similar to the Horvat deal.

Reminder of the Horvat deal on Jan 30th, 2023:
    Beauvillier ($4.15m cap)
    Aatu Raty (unsigned)
2023 1st (23rd overall, Axel Sandin Pellikka) top 12 protected.

    for Horvat (25% retaiend)
    .

Also it's reported the condition on the 2027 3rd pick MTL is receiving is that they receive that pick if Winnipeg wins the 2024 Stanley Cup.

I wonder if Scheifele is going to be out a while longer than we are being told.. Monohan hasn't missed a game yet this year and his .71 points per game (3rd on Habs) isn't that shabby.

That trade essentially turned into replacing Horvat with Hronek. I was disappointed at missing out on ASP, but not anymore.

Good to see the Monahan comeback.

1 point in 5 games with negative possession metrics. 2C Monahan with strong defensive impacts was a narrative that never made sense to me. And I like Monahan and I'm glad he has seemed to get past his injury issues, but the narrative that was sold at the deadline is just not the player Monahan ever was.

I wonder what options there were for that #25 pick besides Monahan.

Cap situation, Monahan was probably the only option that kept Winnipeg cap compliant without removing NHL talent from their roster. Monahan had a $1,985,000 cap hit for WPG

I just hope the Jets find a way to get Cole Perfetti some minutes back.
He may have been "too raw" for NHL playoffs this year... but boy, they certainly didn't give him a chance.
Could've maybe been a dynamic player they needed for a goal or two.

This was a panic trade from the start. Fantastic sell-high trade by MTL!

I imagine Cheveldayoff would've liked a better option than Monahan, but even if he was a long shot, I'd be interested to follow this and see when that #25 pick becomes relevant in the NHL and how competitive Winnipeg is at that stage (Perfetti is how many years from being drafted?). It's possible Hellebuyck continues to produce Vezina seasons three-four years from now and the rest of the team just keep making the playoffs, but given an option to keep the #25 pick or going with Monahan this year, I'm not sure it was a bad call even in hindsight.

Montreal ofc did well to sell high, I'm just not sure the Jets had that many great options. Be happy to be in the playoffs and do nothing?

It's also known the bottom 20 picks this yr are light. So a 25th overall pick could be viewed as a true 2nd round pick (not all years 1st round picks are equal)

The Jets having a dynamic player that they don't give adequate opportunity to?

Hmmmm, where have I heard that before?

Do you have a source for this?
I've read that picks in the 8-15 range are "stronger" than usual...
But I don't think that I've read that the end of the first round had anything inferior to previous years.

    (Not challenging, just curious.)

I'm going off some trade deadline talks when 1st were being moved and it was talked about how the bottom of the draft drops off. Maybe I interpreted it wrong and it was more of a "generally" statement and not this specific year.
