    Default Korpisalo and the mailbag

    Here we go with Korpisalo.

"Korpisalo is a bad goalie who strung together a few nice starts for the Kings who will.disappoint anyone who hitches their wagon to him"

I mean I get it- you've got an incentive to be bold (if you hit you get that clout right?)- but aren't you worried about the damage your advice does to rosters? Like even a little bit?

Some context- Korpisalo played for one of the worst teams of an era in CLB. He played for them BEFORE they added real.help and yes he did struggle but he also had incredible successes along the way. Do you want to bring up the fact that he literally broke the record for the most saves in a single game... in modern history?? Yra the story sets the tone for most of this rebuttal- he made 85 saves over 4 overtime and Columbus STILL lost 3-2. But nah hes just junk right? You know based on your "casual statistical onservations"- that this guy is a sinking ship. It takes a ton of observation and expert insight to decide if Gibson is a top goalie on a bad team or if his game has devolved- but you can figure this one out by looking at a few boxscores- thats really quite the talent!

On a historically bad Columbus team he also maintained a save percentage that floated around 900 and even spiked up to .910 a couple times including last season before he was traded. The best metric I've heard used to describe a goalies individual talent is gials saved above experience ted and last year he managed 12.7 saves above expected- a mark that was good for tenth in the league! And before you say his time in LA dragged his average up I feel like I should point out that his number in Columbus was 10.2- a staggering number in its own right- but it becomes even more impressive when you realize that Elvis was sporting an eyesore -26.74.

I mean its possible Korpisalo was a good goalie on a bad team right? There's statistical evidence to suggest thats exactly what happened! But where's the fun in that? Why bother with sound, helpful and actionable advice when you can use your platform to make wild claims based on not much more than a gut instinct about a guy? Sounds about right at this point.

I can't promise you this player will succeed but I can promise you this "take" is a contrarisn load of malarkey. If it "hits" your writer here looks brilliant cause he called it and even provided some reasoning (read: the absolute bare minimum) and let's be honest- new goalies fail all the time. The problem here is that if this misses- and it probably will- you the reader have passed up a meaningful chance at improving your team because you listened to a writer who wanted to "roleplay" as someone who knows more than he does. At the end of the day are you going to trust the Sens brass who have millions of dollars invested into reaching the post season consistently or a biased writer who gets paid in free guides?

Not sure that the appeal to authority here is any better of a take. Like you said, goalies fail all the time. How many times have we seen a team pay a goalie for what they want him to be rather than what he is? We'd have used the same appeal to authority to vouch for Jack Campbell in Edmonton and that didn't work out.

There's a time and a place for betting on Forsberg, but I'd rather not.

My take - Korpisalo is a mediocre goalie and that was a bad signing and will not go well. So basically disagree with your take and feel the advice was warranted. People are free to take it or leave it and make their own decisions, we are not toddlers.

As for the mailbag, which I wrote, I stand by it. In fact, this is less of a stretch than some other pieces of advice I've given.

The facts are going back to 2015-16 and looking at goalies with 200+ starts, exactly one goalie (Carter Hart) had more Really Bad Starts in fewer games than Korpisalo. And of the 30 who had more RBSs, just three had worse Quality Start Percentages (Hart again, Petr Mrazek, Craig Anderson) and just one (Martin Jones) had a worse cumulative GSAA. That's BADDDDDDD. And guess what - plenty of them played for lousy teams. Can Korpisalo succeed? Never say never; however, I'd be wary of pinning my hopes on him.

Hear hear, wouldn’t trust Korpisalo as far as I can throw him regardless of format.

I actually have a good feeling about Korpisalo in Ottawa but I'm also a Sens fan. Hopefully he can play well enough for us until Sogaard is ready to go.

I have little faith in Korpisalo. He had a good year last year, and it was by far his best year.

The issue is that he's not really ever been good before that, except for his rookie year. I consider his 19-20 season slightly above average, as GSAA is positive, GA%- is 99, and the QS% is also solidly above average:
    https://www.hockey-reference.com/pla...korpijo01.html.

The 11 games with Kings are the best SV%, GAA, GSAA, QS%, and GA%- he's ever posted for a team in a single year, and one of those is heavily a team stat, and one is a counting stat. If you can get to a career high in 11 games in a counting stat, that's not so good.

He's never started 40 games, and is on a team with a worse D that LA.

I'm also a Sens fan and cringed at that signing. hes mediocre at best, and might be able to stretch a few decent games together, and based on past performance, that's about it.

And that might be OK for real life hockey but not for Fantasy, which is the reason for the write-up and why we are here.
