For all we know a team has offered sheeted Nylander, he just hasn't signed it.
The longer he waits to sign, the higher his cap hit is this yr, and lower from year 2 onwards. I'm fine with playing the waiting game. He's not the reason why this team isn't 3-0. And this team's defense isn't this bad. GMs don't make rash decisions 3 games into a season unless it's a head coach firing to save their own butts for a bit longer.

I doubt anyone is actually expecting Nylander to get $8M. His asking price is high because the Leafs' offer is too low. If team is offering you $6M and you want $7M, you don't ask for $7M, you ask for $8M. That's why I'm fine with him asking $8M. He needs to have some room to maneuver. A long-term deal with $7M AAV seems fair for both sides but someone has to take the first step towards that number. That's why it's just stupid to blame the player for this situation - both sides are playing by the rules. If you want to blame someone, blame both sides equally. Or better yet, don't blame anyone. It's just a game.
At the same time, I would love to see some team offer sheet him at $8,118,641. That's the maximum when you only need to give away a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd. Colorado has the cap space and the draft picks to make it happen. Are they confident they won't give away a lottery pick if they add Nylander to that team? Seems possible to me. And if Toronto matches the offer, then you took away some of their cap space for the future.
I'd love this as well. It would have to be from one of the "new" GM's, because it won't come from one of the "old guard" GM's. They wouldn't do that to another GM. It's not collusion if you don't openly talk about it. Truth is, you could do this as an organization, but you would have to deal with your RFA's one year before their contracts are up because surely someone will offer sheet them.
I also think that more offer sheets would eventually end up escalating salaries and ultimately causing labour strife earlier. Just sayin'

"Don't spray that urine on my sons window. If you want a dollar for doing nothing, walk to Canada." - Malory Archer
“Anyone who thinks the pen is mightier than the sword has not been stabbed with both.” - Lemony Snicket
I think it would make bubble teams like Colorado worse in the long run. Creating, eventually, more of an NBA landscape of polar talent level teams.
1st, 2nd, 3rd is a lot now adays with the type of talent coming up. 2nd rounders don't get to the NHL right away, but they are highly talented.
I want to see offer sheets happen just for the entertainment of it.

I think it's very unlikely a team like Toronto would ever retaliate with an offer sheet of their own. They'll have their hands full keeping their own players under the cap, they don't have time or cap space to worry about others. The risk of a "revenge offer sheet" always seems overblown to me.
Good point.
Every game he misses lowers his AAV. I'm expecting 6-8yrs between 7-7.5m ... If I got specific... 7.35/8yr

I am not sure why everyone thinks he's going to sign a long term deal if he isn't getting the big payday he's looking for. If he's doing anything, he's probably signing a bridge deal so he can solidify his payday on his next deal. Just my opinion but that wont surprise me at all.

Due to how the cap hit is calculate when signed a long term deal when yr 1 isn't a full yr makes it so that a 6.5mill typical cap hit turns into something like:
yr 1 = 6.8mill
yr2-7 = 6.3mill
Something like that. And the numbers go up in yr 1 and lower in yr2-7 the longer he takes to sign. Something to do about how yr 1 he'll get paid 6.5mill over his 175days left of a 180day season, gets prorated to whatever, BUT then that gets lowered by that much in yrs2-7.
Cap Friendly has a post about RFA's signing in the middle of the season and how it's calculated. I think that's what people are talking about by his cap hit lowering the longer he waits. Well that's what I'm talking about at least.

Clearly, every player wants the security of a long term deal, but I don't see it happening if they aren't happy with the amount of money in that term and that appears to be the issue with Nylander. I get it, it's a negotiating tactic, but clearly if term was the issue, this would already have been done. He wants a long term deal at more money than the Leafs are willing to pay at this time and here we are.

Oh, he was at flames/nyr yesterday too. so who knows what's up..
So when Dubas went to Switzerland was he really there to loan Nylander to a Swiss league team?
