I see nothing "wrong" with what the kid did. Could he have instead given the medal to his parents? Sure. But receiving anything but a gold is just an over-glorified participation award. You either win the tourney or lose. there is no panel of judges subjectively concluding which team was the good, better, best of the lot. You don't see the loser of the NHL Stanley Cup championship game receiving a runner-up medal, having to remain on the ice watching while the winning team celebrates. No they skate off the ice into the locker room.

Anyone full of self-righteous indignation over this incident should take a deep breath, and hold it in.
