It says "After season 1", does season 1 end July 1st like contracts do so it would effect 2018 draft? Or does he mean after the playoffs so it wouldn't effect 2018 draft

They will not have a lottery pick at this years draft.

That's so weird.. I thought the Knights were guaranteed a lottery pick the first 3 years.. Minor details like I guess can change behind the scenes..

I thought they were guaranteed to be entered into the lottery if they made the playoffs. I find it unlikely there was anything written in that said they don't get lottery odds if they finish 1st overall

Nope. Again, Friedman reported that as happening in a 31 Thoughts, but ended up correcting it in a tweet (posted earlier). I found this on Reddit, and if the guy is right, maybe it leads to some of the confusion.

IIRC, it was on the table as one of two options regarding the Vegas franchise shortly after the announcement in 2016. Bob McCown brought on several hockey people who outlined the following:

Option 1: guaranteed draft odds so that Vegas could draft no lower than 5 for the first three years and no lower than 10 in years 4 and 5.
Option 2: less restrictive protection lists for the expansion draft

They may have gone with option 2 to build a better squad.

To be honest, knowing Bergevin, that's what he's willing to give up for a Zach Parise type player.

They also discussed how high the prices are on guys like Pacioretty (along with others) and will have to come down before any deals are made. The prices will come down once GMs are done playing chicken with each other.

Lots of times the player in Max’s situation here is going UFA. Patches is essentially being bought for two playoff runs by a competitor. At a price that will allow his new team plenty of wiggle room next season as well. This asking price is high, but he should still a decent haul back. I’d have confidence of this happening with most GMs. Bergevin, it so much.

Seems pretty clear that come next season he will no longer be a Hab, but what are the chances he gets dealt by the deadline? I could see them waiting till the summer

What they get in return drops significantly if they wait until the summer. Removing a year where a playoff push can happen reduces return from contenders. Might increase what teams are interested that suddenly have cap room.
