Default What's Your Favorite NHL Trivia?

So I was at a barbecue today, and a friend's 6 year old son who L-O-V-E-S hockey always seeks me out for a trivia challenge. He's good and goes fairly deep when needed (like, dives into some Toledo Walleyes stuff when he's looking to go for the jugular).

It's really fun and great to talk hockey with the next generation. But I'm basically tapped out on the topic after doing this at multiple gatherings. So I thought I'd bring the conversation here and confine it to the NHL.

So I ask: what's your favorite piece(s) of NHL trivia?

I won't give the answer, but I posted this trivia question before. It's takes a bit of explaining.

There are six sets of brothers that have played in the NHL where one of them has scored 50 goals in a season and one has played for the Montreal Canadiens. Just so there's no confusion, it can be any combination. (ie- the guy who scored 50 goals could have also been the guy who also played for the Canadiens, or maybe the guy who scored 50 goals might never have played for the Habs).

    Hope that makes sense.

This one may be too easy for you but it is my favorite.

In the decade of the 80's, Wayne Gretzky obviously had the most points, but who is second for points?

If you look at my name, you'll get a major clue.

    And now for the answer:

    Peter Stastny

Most people don't get it on the first try. Kurri and Messier are usually the first guesses.

The one piece that I enjoy telling people who aren't crazy into hockey, but probably won't fool many here, is; which set of brothers have the most combined points in the NHL? People usually come up with the Sutters, or Stastnys or Sedins, but of course, the correct answer is the Gretzkys. Wayne with 2857 and Brent with 4.

Other fun ones: how many women have had their names engrave on the Stanley Cup? The answer is 12.

Who was the last goalie to play a game with no mask? Andy Brown, shockingly in 1974.

Which two players were both born on the same day, on October 5, 1965? Both went on to the Hall of Fame and are widely considered in among the greatest of all time? Mario Lemieux and Patrick Roy.

    Here's another one.

How many regular season overtime goals did Wayen Gretzky score? 1.

Bonus: What was so special about that one overtime goal? He scored it the same night be broke Gordie Howe's record for most points in a career. Gretzky tied the record in the first, broke it in the third with a minute left when he scored to tie the game. There was a big ceremony. And then he scored again in overtime.

They were both born in Montreal as well. Imagine if it were at the same hospital.

    1) Last skater to play without a helmet is always a straightforward one. That's usually the first trivia question to pop into my head. I also really like the highest scoring brothers as a bit of a trick question.
Also, who has played for the highest number of NHL teams during the course of a career, and how many teams did he play for? Huge bonus for naming them all.

I know it is quite well known... but it is still my favourite! And it is definitely my favourite thing that has anything to do with the Penguins!

And who knows... maybe the little 6 year ol' might not know it!

If it's someone who I feel like might not know the answer....I love the idea of the question "Who is the highest scoring sibling pair in NHL history??"

    Great question. Better answer.

I believe I've posted this before but it's such a worthy trivia question (though it might be too tough for a 6 year old...even with Google around).

The Montreal Canadiens scored their 10,000th home goal in franchise history on January 28th, 2002. There are two distinct attributes of the scoring play that colour this goal. What are they?

    Hint #1:
One attribute deals with a particular aspect of each career of the players registering points

    Hint #2:
The other attribute deals with an aspect unrelated to the goal itself but rather the presentation of the goal on the scoresheet.

    Final hint:
Scoring play was Sergei Berezin from Yanic Perreault & Doug Gilmour.

    Answer:
    1) All three scorers were former Maple Leafs (irony!)
    2) This goal represents the first time ever that an NHL goal has been scored by players wearing consecutive jersey numbers in the 90s (Berezin - #95, Perreault - #94, Gilmour - #93)

Only team to have 3 dmen to score 20 goals in the same season. (Hint: 2 of these players were former Leafs.)

Last player to score at Maple Leaf Gardens is also a good one.

Just guessing, but was it Washington in the early 90s. Iafrate, Cote and Hatcher? I still remember a hockey card that had that feat on it.
