I have the 3rd overall pick in a dynasty startup league drafting soon.
Skater categories are: G, A, Hits, Blocks, FOW, GWG+shGWG, PIM, SOG, STP
Goalie categories are: SV, SV%, GAA, GPt3
Obviously McDavid is going 1st overall.
Second overall could be anybody.. Crosby, Karlsson, Holtby, Eichel, Matthews
At third overall what should I be looking to do? Get an elite young center like Matthews or Eichel?
A proven point producing d man like Karlsson?
A franchise goalie like Holtby or Price?
I don't really have any direction i'm leaning, so it would be nice to hear what you guys think!

Agree with Rt... Maybe Karlsson at a push but that would depend on roster shape and size

I'd probably go for Karlsson, Eichel, or Laine. I wonder how many more years Karlsson can challenge 70 points... probably a few more, but if he's not pushing 70 then he's not worth picking that high. Eichel might actually be my favorite of the three, but being a center only hurts him a bit. Laine gives you an elite option at a shallower position, I still think he'll be the better fantasy option than Matthews.
EDIT: Should mention I'm assuming Crosby goes 2nd. If he drops to your pick, that's who you take.

I'd go with Crosby -> Matthews -> Eichel... and I love EK. FOW's being a cat tips value in favour of the elite Centermen for sure.
How many teams are in your league? Shallower league (<12 teams) and I lean toward Crosby who should remain elite for another 4-5 seasons (easier to replace veterans with prospects later on). Bigger league (>16+ teams) and I'd recommend grabbing one of the young studs and riding their tidal wave for the next 10+ seasons...

Being a Pens fan I would be tempted to take Crosby at 3 if he was there but if Crosby is taken at 2 and Matthews is there at 3 I would take Matthews. Good luck. I just finished one and here is how the top 10 went with these cats: 12 teams 40 men roster, 23 starters (12 forward, 6 Defence, 2 Goalie, 3 Utility, 17 Bench)

I'm surprised that you guys are recommending Matthews at #3. Seems a bit high given other options. I too would consider Karlsson at #3. Also, in a hits/SOG league, Ovechkin still merits consideration.

Im in a very similar league but it's point only.
Not sure Id be able to trade my Crosby for his Matthews. Something to keep in mind.

As someone who moved Eichel for Karlsson + Keller last year... I am enjoying all of the Karlsson love.
