Problem for NYR is they create a big hole down the middle. Maybe JT Miller can do it but the last few seasons he has looked very good as a winger. They are definitely opening it up for Shattenkirk but they really need a C now, but they are loaded up on the wings

Pretty good turnover for Chayka.
The 7th is nothing... and he got DeAngelo for a 2nd rounder, 37th overall (Libor Hajek) to TB last summer.
I'm not big on DeAngelo... but some of these more offensive guys do pop a little later.
DeAngelo will also be closer to his home area of NJ.
Might work out well.
Of note - I'm not good with special terms on contracts...
But it appears that Stepan has a NTC about to kick in for his 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons.
That may have made NYR nervous a bit... enough to trade him at a discount.

Stepan simply wasn't getting it done for the money. They have enough depth down the middle with Miller and Kevin Hayes after Zibanejad to give them as much, if not more, than what they were getting from Stepan. Smart money move.
Losing Raanta probably hurts them more than losing Stepan.

Stepan's LNTC is list of 15 teams he cannot be traded to and it from 2019-21. 2017-2019 is a full NTC. Salary is 7mill, 6mill, 5mill, 5mill. 1mill signing bonus in 2017 (July 1st this yr), and a 3mill signing bonus on July 1st 2020.
