What a fall for Eberle. Hope both players can turn it around on their new teams.
Pretty much this for me - both points.
It's pretty much a budget move to dump Eberle's big cap hit while still retaining some scoring value. I mean one would have to assume that Chiarelli did everything he could to use Eberle as a chip to get a defenseman before doing this.
Goalies: If I'm pickin em you best be sittin em!

I'm with those who agree that it's a trade to better enable things yet to come

Bailey was playing well with Tavares, so there's a good chance of them staying together. Eberle could play on the 2nd line and improve their 2nd line scoring. Not sure how much he can improve it compared to Strome but that's the plan I think.
Tavares likes to shoot, so a playmaking winger like Bailey is a better fit for him IMO. Eberle is also a shooter, so I'm not sure that would be a good fit.
Eberle now becomes the most expensive player/forward on the Isles.
Depending on how much Strome is asking, can't be much, I love this deal for the Oilers.
As a Flames fan, I also love this deal for the Oilers

I would have preferred to deal Eberle for a draft pick, but truthfully I think most realistic Oiler fans knew he wasn't going to get us much of a return, especially considering we couldn't take on any salary. I mean, if the Islanders were stupid enough to deal Hamonic, then we'd find the salary for him, but that was a pipe-dream.
I don't have any faith that Strome will amount to an NHL player. I fully expect him to be out of the NHL in a couple of years. In fact, this might be his last season unless another team (like Arizona) wants to sign him to a one-year deal after this one expires. I don't see the Oilers re-signing him.
As for Chiarelli, I don't much like the deals he makes...I know I'm forgetting some, but Thornton, Kessel, Seguin, Hall, Eberle...he has no problem dealing young talent and he doesn't care all that much about the return in most cases. I don't love it, but at the same time this franchise went years holding on to players that should have been dealt away. I was so tired of hearing Lowe and MacTavish talk about the big deals they were going to make (which never happened).

For all the other people saying "I'll wait to see the other shoe", it's Kris Russell. That's it.
You could have put literally anyone in for Eberle during the playoffs and it would have been an improvement.
The fact they got a younger cheaper player with no commitment (yet) is massive. Eberle was so bad during the playoffs Im surprised they were able to get Strome.
Let me see if I get this straight. From an Oiler's perspective, the last 2 Oiler / Islander trades have essentially ended up being, Eberle, 1st round draft pick, 2nd round draft pick for Strome... Chiarelli really needs to stop trading with Snow...

I like it too both teams too. EDM creates the cap space and gets a player who once showed promise, Strome can't perform worse than what he was doing in Brooklyn.
So, worst case scenario they get a little worse with more flexibility, best case scenario they don't get worse and get that flexibility the same.
