Default Gostisbehere a sure bet ?

I am a contender this year and I am looking to pick Gostisbehere with my first round pick. I am just wondering how safe is this bet. I remembered many great first year D-man that struggled after, like Del Zotto, Barker, Schultz, etc..

    What's your thoughs ?

    Thanks in advance

I'm more convinced now, after seeing him at the World Cup.

Add in that the PP quarterback in Philly often hits 50 (Streit in years past), and I think Ghost wil have a solid season

Defensively I don’t think he’s good, I think he’s a Wisnewski kinda guy but better. He jumps in the rush often, and gets back well. He runs the PP in Philly, even tho I think he’s entry is subpar, but once he’s in he’s smart at not forcing a shot through. He benefits from a crazy oZS% of like 62%.

I think if Provorov doesn’t make the NHL he can be a 50pt D-man. But I don’t think he’ll be that D-man you pick expecting him to be awesome year after year. The amount of D coming through Phillys system is actually pretty talented, and likely to usurp his D#1/PPD#1 spot. His shooting% was stupid high for a D at 11.2%. D shooting% is more like 5-6%.

My guess is he’s a 15G, 35A guy. So pretty much he’s just in line to disappoint from last yrs breakout, but that’s because he but up points once getting that icetime like Karlsson.

he's a lock for phlillys pp imo. why would they change that, even if provorov makes it.

I think he falls short of last year's points-per-game rate but still hits 50.

That shooting percentage from last year will be tough to repeat, but he's looked solid at the WC.
Same as last year's pace? Maybe not. But I still think he's upper-echelon D.
And as for him not being great defensively? Sounds a lot like the knock on Karlsson early on, and on Green before the injuries. When it comes to fantasy, I don't care about his defense.

I would be happy drafting him with a 45 point floor... what else would be available though?

I am mostly concerned about a sophomore slump... I think he is a great player... I just think expectations from coach, teammates and himself might result in him over-playing the puck and resulting in a slump for half of the year.

It was more of a moving forward thinking. This yr he’d need to get hurt or absolutely suck to get off that PP1, but Provorov I think will knock him off sooner rather than later. Just a point I wanted to say in a keeper league so he’s not drafting Ghost thinking he’ll be a lock for each yr of highend production.

He won’t be as sheltered this yr with his oZS%, meaning more dZS, and he’s not the type of guy who gets the puck off someone easily, meaning less offensive chances, meaning more time on the bench. Erik Karlsson in his rookie yr had 60.2oZS%, and that was his highest of his career. Just my thinking.

I am not a big fan of Ghost moving forward, so I will say my thinking is likely biased towards the obvious negative side. But I do think he’s a 50pt guy this yr max.

I wouldn't worry a bit about Gostisbehere. I traded away the Ghost during his hot streak last season basically for John Carlson but am now wishing I kept the Ghost. He is the real deal.

I'm always skeptical of young defensmen who burst onto the scene, but Gostisbehere sure seems like the real deal. He looks great on team NA, and he quickly beat out Trouba for a spot. I wouldn't hesitate to draft him as a 45-50 point player.

I'm with Eric here. Expectations are tempered, but still decently high just because of how damn good he was last season.

It's hard to call a kid with 64 total NHL games played a "sure thing" for anything. That being said, he should be the obvious choice for PP1 with Philly. That doesn't guarantee anything for actual production, just opportunity.
