In this case the prospect is likely to become the better player. Probably by 10 points on both the average season and the peak season.
It wouldn't surprise me if Pulj matches or beats Schwartz in secondary categories too.
Schwartz
Puljujarvi
I own Schwartz and am thinking of making an offer for a pick that could be Puljujarvi. I suspect the responses would mostly be of the kind "Schwartz now, Puljujarvi later" but I'm wondering what people think in terms of relative upside. Is the new kid on the block better? Is playing with McDavid overblowing his stock? I usually like proven over prospect but in this case is the prospect likely to become better?
Also, salary cap is a factor since I'll be saving $2 million in each of the next three years with Puljujarvi.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.

I agree. I have never been that impressed with Schwartz. He is on a team with numerous talented forwards and Hitchcock rarely gets the best out of his players. I've traded Schwartz away in a couple different leagues.

FWIW, I think your hunch is right: Schwartz now, Puljujarvi long-term. The million dollar question is...how long will you wait?
If you need to cap savings and/or you are not going for the title this year, then I think this move is ok...
Of course, that's also qualified by Puljujarvi being on the board. Trading Schwartz for a pick that "could be" Puljujarvi? That's a bit vague.
Schwartz vs. Puljujarvi like you said it'll be Schwartz now and maybe next season as well.
but by 3rd year I think Puljujarvi would have forced this way to top line by then.
So, I'd give up injury prone Schwarts for Puljujarvi but that also depends if you have a player to cover
Schwartz in the mean time.
Puljujarvi to me is solid 2way winger suitable for all situations. Worth the "Gamble"
Worst case you have 2mil to spend on someone else

Thanks everyone for your input. I am in win-now mode (I always seem to be as I never do rebuilds) but I feel that if Puljujarvi plays this year and gets 45-50 points, I can take the hit in production now.
If I make the offer, it would be Schwartz for the 3rd overall pick in this year's draft and I'm assuming Matthews and Laine go 1 and 2.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.
Ok, yeah, that's a safe assumption. I play a little more conservatively than you - if I'm in win now, I don't downgrade at the beginning of the year hoping it works out down the road. To me, this only makes sense if it's something you must do to get under the cap. Just my 2 cents.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.
Schwartz is at 5,3 and projects 60 points this year and probably as much in the following 2
Pul is at 3,425 and projects 45 points this year witb 60 next and maybe 70 the year after
So to save 1,875m i'd sacrifice 20 points this year as your $/point ratio is similar anyways
To put a closure on this thread, I ended up keeping Schwartz - I am in win-now mode and I am reminded of how much we overvalue prospects before even playing a single game in the NHL. Yeah, I know Puljujarvi is supposed to be a sure thing but Schwartz is already a 60-point player in the NHL, with potential for 70 points as soon as this year.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.

I like JP here. Schwartz always disappoints. Always has such hype each season yet never lives up to it for whatever reason.

PoolParty for sure. He's going to jump right into the NHL and probably put up 40 points, and then it's upwards and onward from that point. I'm gambling on the upside with him.
