Well they pay taxes on their income. So endorsements yes. Bonuses from winning medals? I don't know.

The US government takes not only a cut of the bonuses but they tax for the value of the medals themselves. Admittedly the values on the medals aren't that high since they aren't pure gold or silver, and bronze is cheap full stop, but it seems like a situation where for once the tax man can just bugger off. I've often wondered how many other developed nations do this.

Good thin he only wins them every 4 years... if he won them all at once he would have been pushed up a couple tax brackets.

I've been looking all over the place for video of Hope Solo's post match press conference. Sadly I can't find any video of it, just this lone photo of the moment....

Team USA being out of the women's soccer really opens up the field. I'd love to see Sinclair get a gold to cap her career.

That would be awesome... especially after they got screwed out of a chance to play for gold at the London Olympics. poetic justice I guess.

There you go... I think her intentions were actually ok, but her choice of words were terrible. And sorry Hope, don't hate the player, hate the game. She's basically giving the same interview as every opponent of the Devils in the early 2000s.

Full quote makes it worse IMO. She's whining about being beat by a good game plan.

Precisely. Sure it was boring, but Sweden did what they had to do if they wanted to win. If Sweden plays the fast open game that Hope demands they're bucking long odds. Hats off to them for doing what they had to do to win.

The daughter of Han Solo >> Hope Solo really showed her true colors yesterday, WOW.. Could you imagine if she lost in the semi's to Canada in London just like Canada did to USA?? I was kinda hoping for a Canada vs. USA gold medal game actually.. Ahwell, the Canadian ladies will have to take the gold from someone else now..

USA is killing it though this Olympics, it's time to let their siblings to the North win something!!

As an aside, how dominant is ledecky? In 2008 Addlington beat an almost 20 yr old record by 2 seconds in the 800m freestyle. Ledecky just swam almost 10 seconds faster than that. Daaaamn.

She's incredible. The US swimming team as a whole has been completely dominant. It seems like they get a medal in nearly every event. Really impressive to watch.

When you get a juggernaut team in soccer vs a low team, the low team plays defensive 100% of the time and hopes for a break. It’s like the trap in hockey. A lot of big teams hate when it happens in soccer and they lose because soccer is all about capitalizing on your shots. When you have 4 people in front of you, you try and shoot it around them, and it goes wide.

Crappy way to lose in soccer, but it’s still a loss. She also said it in the absolute most disrespectful way ever. Her tactic to ice the shooter when she went to change her gloves was “smart” but over the top I think, and really glad it didn’t work.

Doesn’t hurt that Alex Morgan is also a really good player :-).

Also, Andre De Grasse is going to be the new face of sprinting. With Gatlin and Bolt likely done, De Grasse is young, cool story (started sprinting only like 3 yrs ago), and good.
