The Wings cap situation is actually a bit better viewed on generalfanager. The Wings also have some peripheral cap hits that aren't obvious.

Both Franzen ($3.95m) and Joe Vitale ($1.1m) are both going to be LTIR.
Many people don't remember that Vitale got concussed in a fight after just 1gp last year. He's done.
This is why Detroit actually acquired him from Arizona in the Datsyuk trade, they take back some actual cash they have to pay, but it's not a cap hit.

The Wings actual situation is this:
$72.8m spent on 15F/6D/2G
Now, most teams will carry the +2F/+1D, so Detroit is likely going to eventually move/demote a F and add/promote a D to get to 14F/7D/2G.

One team that has that... is... Arizona.
So you may see Holland/Chayka make another deal to get Detroit a #7D and ship out one of their kids (Jurco or Pulkk).

More likely, Detroit will just go into camp with 15F... in the case that one goes down.
If one doesn't go down, they'll likely push Athanasiou down to AHL (-$628k) until the Wings have an injury, and pull one of Oullet ($715k) or Lashoff ($650k) up in case of injury to their 6D.
Either way, that'll keep them just under the cap. They're at $72.8m/$73.0m and all those players just mentioned are within $100k with Detroit having $200k of cushion.

Holland was actually able to levy some weight into the Mrazek contract situation by saying "Here's what we have cap space for... so here's what we can offer you."
So, Mrazek is their final team piece for 2016-2017 and they got him at what most of us would consider a discount.
GMs like Holland... smart, smart, smart.
