Ellis does because he's a right handed, puck moving defenseman. That's their focus. Looking for someone who can move the puck efficiently and offensive at the same time. That's why I dont think Brodin is as good a fit for the Oilers; the lack of offense he offers.

But doe either fulfill the role their desperately looking for on that Edmonton Blue line? When it comes to trading with Nash... I think it's go big or go home for both these teams. (I also agree... for hall... I want Josi)
I agree with the go big or go home bit. Both organizations probably need a bit of a change. However, Josi makes Weber expendable now, but Weber doesn't make Josi expendable anymore. Josi is the one carrying the puck out of the D-zone every single time. I don't know if NSH would even consider a Hall/Josi swap.

Isn't there talk of Weber moving every single offseason?

Anyways I'd think the Oilers move guys like RNH/Eberle/Yakupov and target blueliners like Vatanen/Barrie, then fill in forwards with guys like McGinn. Keep Hall.

The idea of Nashville and Edmonton as trading partners has made so much sense for awhile I don't get how they haven't worked something out.

As far as the original deal goes I think Hall for Weber straight up would be interesting. Given their respective age and contract I'm not sure either side should have to add to make that deal and I think both teams are probably improved overall with a straight swap. I also think Chiarelli will be scared off by Weber's age and the massive term and dollars left on his deal.

Personally, I think this trade is pretty solid... seems to make a lot of sense by positional need.
I would say the main reason it won't happen though is that Nashville has emerged as a solid hockey market.
They've actually grown a nice fan base with a lot of "Weber" jerseys in the seats.
Fans get used to their own players and how the team has built around them.

The Preds have already paid out FOUR $13m signing bonuses to Weber.
They've got two more $8m bonuses due.
They've already paid out a TON of actual cash to Weber (ignore the cap implications, they're not as key)... and the Preds are now nearing the affordable back-end of his contract.

Even if he is on the wrong-side of his peak... he still has high value to the organization.
    He's only a $6m actual cost player come 2018-2019.
And he's basically the FACE OF THE FRANCHISE.
So... I can't see this trade being made as long as Poile is the GM.
And Poile will remain the Preds GM because the organization has been an overall success under his tenure.

Do not like the deal for Edmonton. The 4th overall kills it for me.

I expect with Nashville doing as well as they did this season that they're not looking to make the blockbuster deal. That was Jones for Johansen.
And I can't see Edmonton absorbing that contract and giving away Hall to boot.

Sorry to be a wet blanket.

As a believer in advanced stats, I'm not sure if I want any piece of Weber's contract, let alone giving up Hall and the 4th for him…
